AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace proofreaders?
Partly, and the routine part is already gone. Tools like Grammarly catch most spelling, grammar and punctuation slips for free, so paid proofreading now centers on house style, fact checks, final page proofs and high stakes text. It is a small field, about 8,500 jobs in 2025, and BLS projects it to shrink over 2025 to 2035.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (43-9081.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark spelling, grammar and punctuation errors in copy | AI does this today | Grammarly, LanguageTool, ProWritingAid | Grammarly's free plan corrects spelling and grammar inside Word, Google Docs and the browser, so the routine first sweep now takes a tool and a quick human pass. [3][4] |
| Correct or log omissions and inconsistencies such as style and spelling variants | AI helps, you check | Grammarly | Grammarly Pro can apply a custom style guide and brand tone, but catching a name spelled two ways 40 pages apart or a missing paragraph still needs a careful reader. [4] |
| Compare figures and details against the original copy or other records | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Claude | AI file analysis can line up two documents and flag differences, but it can misread a table or skip a number, so you still verify the figures that matter. [5] |
| Check usage against style manuals and grammar references | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Grammarly | A chatbot answers a Chicago or AP style question instantly, but it can state a rule confidently that your client's house style does not follow, so you confirm against the manual. [4][5] |
| Check the facts in stories using the internet | AI helps, you check | Perplexity, ChatGPT | AI search tools return answers with linked sources, which speeds fact checking, but Stanford found even specialist AI research tools gave false answers on at least one in six test questions, so you open the source yourself. [6][7] |
| Research, read and archive copy using online tools | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Google Gemini | Deep research and file analysis features gather background and summarize long documents quickly, leaving you to judge what is accurate and relevant. [5] |
| Write headlines, captions and cover copy | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, Claude | A chatbot gives you twenty headline options in seconds, but picking one that is accurate, fits the space and matches the publication's voice is an editorial decision. [5] |
| Design simple page layouts with text, photos and graphics | AI helps, you check | Canva, Adobe Express | Canva's AI features resize and adapt designs and remove backgrounds, but print layouts with strict specifications still need a trained eye. [8] |
| Read final proofs to confirm every correction was made | Still human | None | The last check of a print or press ready file is where a missed fix becomes a costly reprint, and the person signing off answers for it. |
| Send marked proofs to authors, editors and typesetters for correction | Still human | None | Deciding which changes go to whom, and chasing them through a production deadline, is coordination work between people. |
| Discuss manuscript changes and suggestions with authors and editors | Still human | None | Authors push back on edits, and explaining why a change matters without bruising egos takes tact a tool does not have. |
| Read proofs aloud with a partner, calling out punctuation and unusual spellings | Still human | None | This two person method is kept for text where a single slip is expensive, and its value comes from two people catching each other's misses. |
| Check spacing, positioning and measurements of page elements | Still human | None | Layout software handles the measuring, but noticing a widow, a bad break or a caption under the wrong photo in the final pages still takes a human eye. |
The job market for proofreaders

Coding and checking patient records rewards the same attention to detail, and BLS projects much faster than average growth. Your habit of catching small mismatches carries straight over to checking codes against charts. [10]

Turning complex products into clear instructions pays far more, and your command of style and accuracy is the core skill. BLS warns AI may slow growth here too, so pair it with subject knowledge in a field like software or medical devices. [11]

Quick questions
Will AI replace proofreaders?
It has already replaced much of the basic spell and grammar check, which Grammarly's free plan does [4]. The job is small and shrinking: about 8,500 jobs in 2025 with a projected decline over 2025 to 2035 and about 1,100 openings a year [1]. Work that remains centers on style, accuracy and final sign off.
Can Grammarly replace a human proofreader?
For everyday emails and documents, mostly yes. Grammarly works in Word, Google Docs and browsers [3], and Pro adds full sentence rewrites, a style guide and brand tone [4]. It does not check whether a fact is true, whether a figure matches the source, or whether the final printed page is right.
Can AI check facts reliably?
Not on its own. AI search tools link to sources [6], but Stanford researchers found legal AI tools built for accuracy still gave incorrect answers more than 17% of the time [7]. A proofreader who opens and reads the source catches what the tool gets wrong.
Do clients ask proofreaders to check for AI written text?
Some do, but detection is shaky. An independent 2025 study found the best detectors rarely accused human writers, yet every detector struggled on passages under 50 words [9]. Treat a detector score as a signal to discuss, not proof.
Is proofreading still a good career in 2026?
As a full time job it is getting harder. The median pay was $51,120 in 2025, but there are only about 1,100 openings a year [1]. Many proofreaders now combine it with editing, fact checking or a specialty such as legal, medical or technical documents, where errors are expensive.
