AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace video editors?
Not the whole job. AI now writes captions, pulls ready to post clips out of long recordings and gives first passes on rough cuts, multicam switching and audio cleanup, but deciding which take tells the story, where a cut lands and what the director actually wants is still the editor's work. BLS expects jobs for editors and camera operators to grow 3% from 2025 to 2035, with about 5,600 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (27-4032.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add titles and captions to finished videos | AI does this today | Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut | Premiere Pro transcribes speech in 18 languages and times captions to the speaker, and CapCut does the same in a few clicks, so you mostly fix names, jargon and timing before publishing. [4][9] |
| Organize raw footage into a rough cut that follows the script | AI helps, you check | DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro | DaVinci Resolve can build a timeline from a script and park alternate takes on extra tracks for you, and Premiere lets you cut by editing the transcript, but the director's plan and the best take are still your call. [5][4] |
| Trim long recordings into shorter clips and highlight reels | AI does this today | OpusClip, Descript | OpusClip pulls highlights out of a long video, reframes them for vertical, adds captions and ranks each clip, so for webinars and podcasts your job shrinks to picking and polishing the best ones. [7][8][6] |
| Clean up dialogue, sound and picture problems | AI helps, you check | DaVinci Resolve, Descript, Topaz Labs (Gigapixel) | Resolve can balance an unmixed track, match dialogue from different rooms and strip silences, and Topaz recovers detail, but heavy settings can invent detail or make voices sound processed, so every fix needs a careful listen and look. [5][6][11] |
| Create graphic and visual effects such as background removal and slow motion | AI helps, you check | Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Topaz Labs (Gigapixel) | Premiere's Generative Extend adds frames to hold a shot longer and Resolve's Magic Mask and Set Extender isolate people or fill a frame, but generated frames can warp around fast motion and text. [3][5][11] |
| Review footage sequence by sequence before assembling it | AI helps, you check | Adobe Premiere Pro | Premiere's Media Intelligence recognizes objects, places and camera angles so you can search hours of footage in seconds, but finding the best performance or the take with a hidden problem still means watching it. [3] |
| Select and combine the most effective shots into a story | Still human | None | Choosing what the audience sees and in what order is the editorial judgment that makes a film work. |
| Cut between angles so each cut feels seamless | AI helps, you check | DaVinci Resolve | Resolve can switch multicam angles to whoever is speaking, which gives a fair first pass on interviews and podcasts, but timing a cut on an action, a breath or a look is still a feel for rhythm. [5] |
| Review the assembled cut on screen to decide what needs fixing | Still human | None | Judging pacing, continuity and emotional impact across a whole piece takes a person who knows what the project is meant to say. |
| Verify key numbers and time codes on materials | Still human | None | Conforming and delivering to a broadcaster or finishing house depends on exact time codes, and one wrong reel can break the final output. |
| Decide which sound effects, visual effects and music the film needs | Still human | None | Picking the right music cue or effect is a creative choice tied to the story and to rights and budget limits. |
| Study scripts to understand the production | Still human | None | Knowing what each scene has to accomplish shapes every cut, and that understanding comes from reading and talking with the team. |
| Meet with producers and directors about the editing approach and screen cuts for them | Still human | None | Translating vague notes like make it breathe into concrete changes is a working relationship built over many sessions. |
| Supervise assistant editors and others on the editing team | Still human | None | Assigning work, keeping media organized across a team and training assistants is people management. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace video editors?
Not soon. BLS projects jobs for film and video editors and camera operators to grow 3% from 2025 to 2035 and says demand for content and special effects will create jobs for editors [2]. About 5,600 openings a year are expected across the group [2].
What AI tools do video editors use?
Adobe Premiere Pro offers automatic captions, transcript based editing, Generative Extend and Media Intelligence search [3] [4]. DaVinci Resolve 20 adds script based timelines, automatic multicam switching and an AI audio mix [5], Descript's Underlord edits by chat [6], OpusClip turns long videos into ranked short clips [7] and CapCut generates captions [9].
Can AI edit a whole video by itself?
For short social clips it comes close: OpusClip finds highlights, reframes and captions them [7], though its virality score is only an estimate [8]. Descript says its AI co-editor still needs clear instructions and regular check ins and can make wrong assumptions [6]. Story, pacing and director notes stay with the editor.
How much do video editors make?
Film and video editors earned a median of $75,420 in May 2025, and about 39,400 people held the job in 2025 [2]. Pay varies widely between freelance social media work and union film and TV editing.
Is video editing a good career with AI?
It still is for editors who own the story and use AI for the busywork. A RedShark News review of AI editing tools found they speed up rough cuts and cleanup but will not replace deep narrative editing [10]. BLS expects modest growth [2], and the steps up, such as art director, depend on years of creative experience [12].
