AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace loan officers?
Not the people side. Underwriting software already recommends decisions, and AI assistants now answer borrower questions, collect documents and check files, but they are not licensed, so negotiating problem files, giving advice and earning referrals keep loan officers in the deal. BLS projects just 1% job growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 17,100 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (13-2072.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute payment schedules | AI does this today | Bottomline LoanMaster | Loan origination and servicing systems build the amortization schedule the moment the terms are entered, so your part is explaining it to the borrower. [1] |
| Analyze applicants' finances, credit and property values to see if a loan makes sense | AI helps, you check | Experian Credinomics, Better Tinman | BLS says most lenders use underwriting software that produces a recommendation, and Better says its system automates underwriting for nearly 40% of its files, but self employed income, thin credit and odd properties still need a person to read the file. [1][2][8] |
| Approve loans within your limits and refer larger ones to management | AI helps, you check | None | Simple consumer loans may be fully automated, while mortgages and business loans still need someone with lending authority to sign off. [2] |
| Pull credit reports, financial statements and other documents for the file | AI helps, you check | Equifax Application Engine, Experian Transact, Better Betsy | Credit bureau systems pull reports automatically and AI assistants like Better's Betsy ask borrowers for missing items, but chasing tax returns and explanation letters on a messy file is still on you. [1][7] |
| Review and update credit and loan files | AI helps, you check | Better Betsy | AI can scan a loan file for open conditions and missing documents in seconds instead of 15 to 20 minutes, but each file still needs a human check before it moves forward. [2][8] |
| Market loan products and build referral networks with agents and builders | AI helps, you check | Better Betsy | AI assistants now call back leads from sites like LendingTree and NerdWallet and restart abandoned applications, but real estate agents send buyers to loan officers they know and trust. [7] |
| Contact borrowers who are behind and negotiate repayment plans | AI helps, you check | Smallest.ai voice agents | AI voice agents already send reminders, offer set installment plans and call back to confirm a promise to pay, but disputes and real hardship cases are passed to a person. [10] |
| Meet applicants to gather information and answer questions about the process | AI helps, you check | Better Betsy | Better's AI voice assistant handles over 125,000 borrower conversations a month, gathering documents and answering eligibility questions, but it is not licensed and hands harder questions to a loan officer. [7][8] |
| Explain loan types, credit options and terms | AI helps, you check | Better Betsy | AI assistants can explain disclosures and answer routine eligibility questions, but matching someone to the right program is a licensed officer's call and responsibility. [8] |
| Review loan agreements for completeness and compliance with policy and law | AI helps, you check | Infrrd MortgageCheckAI | Quality control software compares Loan Estimates and Closing Disclosures and flags missing documents and fee tolerance problems, but people review the flags and the lender stays accountable for every disclosure. [9] |
| Work with underwriters to fix problems in mortgage applications | Still human | None | Saving a deal that hit a condition means negotiating with underwriters, the borrower and sometimes the seller at the same time. |
| Help clients set financial goals and plan how to reach them | Still human | None | Planning around a family's goals depends on trust and honest advice, not just numbers in a form. |
| Handle customer complaints and resolve them | Still human | None | An upset borrower whose closing slipped needs a person with the authority to make it right, and even collection call vendors send distressed callers to a human. |
| Counsel clients on spending and borrowing problems | Still human | None | Talking someone through debt takes empathy and tact that people expect from another person. |
| Supervise loan staff | Still human | None | Coaching processors and junior officers, setting priorities and handling mistakes are management work. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace loan officers?
Not entirely, but it is slowing hiring. BLS projects 1% job growth from 2025 to 2035 and names productivity technology in loan processing as a reason [2]. Most lenders already use underwriting software that produces a loan recommendation, and simple consumer loans may be fully automated [2].
Can AI approve a loan on its own?
For simple consumer loans, sometimes yes [2]. For mortgages and business loans, software makes a recommendation, and approval within set limits or referral to management is still part of the loan officer's job [1]. BLS also notes some small banks and credit unions still rely on loan officers to underwrite instead of software [2].
Are lenders using AI assistants to talk to borrowers?
Yes. Better's AI voice assistant Betsy answers application questions, follows up on leads and asks borrowers for missing information [7]. Better says it handles over 125,000 borrower interactions a month and passes questions it is unsure about to a licensed loan officer, since Betsy itself is not licensed [8].
Do mortgage loan officers need a license?
Yes. Mortgage loan officers need a Mortgage Loan Originator license, which means prelicensing courses, a national exam and background and credit checks, renewed every year [2]. They also register through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System [3].
Is being a loan officer still a good career with AI?
It can be if you are strong with people. The median loan officer earned $76,690 in May 2025 [2]. Software handles more of the analysis, so officers who bring in referrals and steer hard files to closing are the ones lenders keep.
