GROWING · $134,920

Nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist or nurse midwife

Advanced practice nurses diagnose, prescribe and deliver anesthesia or births under their own license, which is work AI cannot take responsibility for. It builds directly on your RN license but needs a master's degree, state APRN licensure and a national certification exam. [8]

Median pay $134,920 · outlook +36%

GROWING · $123,860

Medical and health services manager

Managers run units, budgets and staffing, and they decide how AI tools are rolled out, so clinical experience is a real advantage. Many start as nurse managers; a bachelor's degree is typical and some roles prefer a master's. [9]

Quick questions

Will AI replace nurses?

No. BLS projects registered nurse jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, adding about 194,700 jobs, because an aging population needs more care [2]. Healthcare practitioner jobs as a group are among the fastest growing in the BLS projections [11].

What AI tools do nurses use?

The biggest change is ambient charting. Microsoft Dragon Copilot records nurse and patient interactions in Epic Rover and drafts flowsheet entries the nurse reviews and files [3], and Microsoft made it generally available in the U.S. in December 2025 [4]. Epic also drafts shift handoff summaries [12], and many hospitals run early warning scores such as sepsis alerts [5].

Can a nurse override an AI alert?

It depends on hospital policy. In one National Nurses United survey, 24% of nurses had been prompted by AI to make a choice they felt was not in the patient's best interest, and 31% of those were not allowed to override it [6]. In a 2024 NNU survey, 40% said they could not change AI scores predicting outcomes or discharge readiness [7].

Are AI sepsis alerts accurate?

Not always. A 2021 University of Michigan study in JAMA Internal Medicine found the Epic Sepsis Model missed about two thirds of sepsis cases while alerting on 18% of all hospitalized patients [5]. That is why alerts support nursing judgment instead of replacing it.

Is nursing a good career with AI?

Yes, it is one of the safest. The median RN earned $97,550 in May 2025 [2], and nurse practitioner, anesthetist and midwife jobs are projected to grow 36% [8]. Nurses who learn to use charting tools well and question bad alerts will be in demand.
