OUR VERDICT

Google Gemini is the most capable free all rounder we have found, covering chat, writing, research and image generation and editing with just a Google account. It is worth starting with for most people, especially Google users, but the free limits are not published, the free context window is small and images carry a visible watermark.

What Google Gemini is

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It answers questions, drafts and edits writing, researches the web, and creates and edits images Google AI plans ↗ Gemini images ↗. All you need is a Google account Google AI plans ↗.

The free plan runs Gemini 3.6 Flash with varying access to Gemini 3.1 Pro Google AI plans ↗. It includes Deep Research, which reads many web pages and writes a report, Canvas for drafting documents, Gemini Live voice chats, Gems (custom assistants you set up once), Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of Google storage Google AI plans ↗.

Paid Google AI plans raise the usage limits and add Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Vids, plus video generation Google AI plans ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this review with results.

What it does well

The free plan is unusually generous. Deep Research, image generation and editing, Canvas and voice are all included at no cost, and Google's plan page lists no separate limit on free Deep Research Google AI plans ↗. Many rivals ration research or reserve it for paid plans.

Images are a real strength. Free users get Nano Banana 2, Google's image model, with character consistency, photo combining, 2K resolution and text inside images in many languages Gemini images ↗. You can edit a photo by asking: change the lighting, swap a background, add an element or resize to a new format without cropping Gemini images ↗. Google's image models rank in the top ten of Arena's text to image leaderboard Arena images ↗.

Google's text models also rank well. On Arena's text leaderboard, a preliminary Gemini 4 model holds the top spot and Gemini 3.8 Flash is in the top ten, though the free app runs the models listed on Google's plan page, not necessarily the newest ones Arena text ↗ Google AI plans ↗.

The paid step up is cheap. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month for twice the free usage and 400 GB of storage, the lowest paid upgrade among the big chatbots we checked Google AI plans ↗.

Where it falls short

Free limits are vague. Google says usage is compute based and refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, but it gives no numbers Gemini limits ↗. Media generation and Deep Research use more of your allowance, and free users may be limited first when demand is high Gemini limits ↗.

The free context window is small. Without a plan you get 32,000 tokens, compared with 128,000 on Plus and 1 million on Pro and Ultra Gemini limits ↗. That limits how much of a long document Gemini can work with at once on the free plan.

Images are marked. Every image carries an invisible SynthID watermark and a visible AI watermark Gemini images ↗. The better Nano Banana 2.1 model and the Redo with Pro option are for paid plans Gemini images ↗ Gemini limits ↗. Image creation is for users 18 and over Gemini images ↗.

Video is paid only. Video generation is not available without a plan Gemini limits ↗.

For headshots or detailed photos, expect less control. Zapier's photo editor reviewer left general image generators such as Nano Banana off its list after seeing a loss of detail on high resolution photos Zapier ↗.
