Yes. AI image generators now produce images good enough for social posts, ads and websites, and the best ones finally get text right. For most people we recommend ChatGPT: OpenAI's image models top Arena's public image leaderboard, and it is included in the $20 Plus plan you can also use for writing. For free, use Google Gemini.
Businesses already use AI images every day for marketing, and free plans from Google, OpenAI and Adobe make it easy to start.ChatGPT
Best for most people who want great images, readable text and easy edits by just asking.
OpenAI's image models lead the most watched independent ranking. On Arena's text to image leaderboard, updated October 7, 2026, OpenAI holds the top three places, led by preliminary gpt-image-2.5 models and gpt-image-2 Arena image leaderboard ↗. Arena ranks models by blind votes from the public, so it is a useful check on quality, though it is not a test of your specific use.
ChatGPT Images 2.0, powered by gpt-image-2, launched in April 2026 with images up to 2,000 pixels on the long edge and much better text in many languages Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗. That matters for small businesses: menus, flyers, sale banners and social posts need words that are spelled right. One review notes that full paragraphs of text inside an image still break down after a few hundred characters Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗. You make and change images in a normal chat, so you can say "make the background white" instead of learning prompt tricks.
Free users can make images with standard gpt-image-2, while the thinking mode, extended reasoning and web search during generation need a paid plan such as Plus Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗. Plus is $20 a month OpenAI help, Plus ↗ and also gives you the full ChatGPT assistant. OpenAI's pricing page lists image creation as limited on Free and unlimited on Pro ChatGPT pricing ↗, but does not publish exact image counts for Plus. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.
Why we like it
- Top ranked image models on Arena's public leaderboard
- Strong text rendering in many languages
- Edit images by chatting, no prompt skills needed
- Comes with the full ChatGPT assistant
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Exact image limits on Plus are not published
- Long paragraphs of text in images still break
- Best thinking mode needs a paid plan
Google Gemini
Best for anyone who wants good images and photo edits without paying.
Google's free Gemini plan includes image generation and editing with no subscription, just a Google account Google AI plans ↗. Google's image models, sold under the Nano Banana name, rank in the top ten of Arena's text to image leaderboard, with Nano Banana 2.1 in sixth place Arena image leaderboard ↗. Free users also get limited access to Nano Banana Pro in Google's Flow tool Google AI plans ↗.
Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026, with better visual quality, prompt following, character consistency and text rendering, and output up to 4K Nano Banana 2.1 ↗. It can blend up to 14 reference images, which helps when you want the same product or person across a set of images Nano Banana 2.1 ↗. That report covers the developer version; it does not say whether the Gemini app has switched to it yet Nano Banana 2.1 ↗.
The free plan has usage caps that refresh every five hours up to a weekly limit Google AI plans ↗. If you need more, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and adds more Nano Banana access in Search and 200 Flow credits Google AI plans ↗.
Why we like it
- Free image generation and editing
- Top ten image model on Arena
- Cheap $4.99 upgrade
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Five hour and weekly caps
- Newest model may reach developers before the app
Adobe Firefly
Best for businesses that want commercially safe images and several top models under one low price.
Adobe Firefly Standard is $9.99 a month for 2,000 generative credits, which also covers 20 five second videos Firefly plans ↗. Firefly is unusual because it gives you Adobe's own models plus partner models in one place, including GPT Image, Google's Nano Banana and FLUX for images, and Runway, Kling and Luma for video Firefly plans ↗. Partner models draw from your monthly credits Firefly plans ↗.
Adobe's main selling point is safety for business use. Adobe says outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use and that the models are trained on licensed content and public domain content where copyright has expired Firefly plans ↗. Note the limit of that promise: Adobe says you are responsible for checking content made with partner models Firefly plans ↗.
There is a free plan with limited daily generations Firefly plans ↗. Pro is $19.99 for 4,000 credits, and promotional first year prices on the higher Pro Plus and Premium tiers end October 21 Firefly plans ↗.
Why we like it
- Adobe models trained on licensed content
- GPT Image, Nano Banana and FLUX in one app
- Includes some video and audio credits
- Free plan to try
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Commercial safety promise covers Adobe models only
- Credits are shared across many tools
- Plan lineup is complicated
Midjourney
Best for designers and brands that want a distinctive artistic look and lots of images.
Midjourney is the tool many designers use for a polished, artistic style. Its current default model is V8.2, released July 24, 2026 Midjourney models ↗. Midjourney does not appear in Arena's top ten Arena image leaderboard ↗, so we see it as a style choice rather than the leader on prompt accuracy.
The reason to upgrade is volume. The Standard plan is $30 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, with 15 fast GPU hours and unlimited images in Relax Mode Midjourney plans ↗. Basic at $10 a month gets about 200 minutes of fast time and no Relax Mode Midjourney plans ↗. If privacy matters, note that Stealth Mode, which keeps your images private, is only on the $60 Pro and $120 Mega plans Midjourney plans ↗.
Midjourney's plan page does not mention a free trial Midjourney plans ↗.
Why we like it
- Distinctive, polished artistic style
- Unlimited Relax Mode images from $30
- Annual billing saves 20 percent
- Image and video in one subscription
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- No free trial mentioned
- Images are public unless you pay $60 for Stealth Mode
- Not in Arena's top ten for prompt accuracy

Who this is for
This guide is for owners and marketers who need images for social media, ads, websites, menus, flyers and product mockups, without hiring a designer for every post. It is also for anyone curious about making art with AI.
If you need a professional headshot, a specialist tool may work better; see our guide to AI headshot generators. If you need to edit existing photos, a free photo editor might be enough.
Why you should trust us
We read each vendor's pricing and plan pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. For image quality we relied on Arena's text to image leaderboard, which ranks models from blind public votes and was updated October 7, 2026 Arena image leaderboard ↗, plus launch coverage of the newest models Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗ Nano Banana 2.1 ↗. Every fact links to its source.
We have not yet tested these tools hands on for this guide. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this page with sample images for common business tasks. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.
How we picked
We started with the image tools people use most, plus the companies whose models rank highest on Arena Arena image leaderboard ↗. We then asked what a small business gets for its money: how many images, whether the images are private, whether you can use them commercially, and how easy it is to get the result you want.
Text rendering mattered a lot. Most business images include words, and older generators were known for garbled letters. Ease of editing also mattered, because most people need small changes, not a fresh image every time.
- Image quality and prompt accuracy, using Arena rankings as a check
- Readable text inside images
- Editing by plain language instructions
- Price per image and clear limits
- Commercial use and privacy of your images
- A free plan or low cost entry tier
What an AI image generator can and can't do today
Today's best tools can create realistic photos, illustrations and graphics from a sentence, edit an existing image, keep a product or character consistent across several images, and render short text well. Nano Banana 2.1 accepts up to 14 reference images Nano Banana 2.1 ↗, and gpt-image-2 handles text in many scripts Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗.
They still struggle with long passages of text Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗, exact brand logos, and precise layouts such as a full menu with prices. Treat AI images as a strong first draft and check every word and detail before you publish.
How to get better business images
You do not need special prompt tricks with modern tools, but a little structure helps. Describe the subject, the setting, the style and the exact words you want, in that order. For example: a bottle of our lavender body oil on a marble counter, soft morning light, clean product photo style, with the words Fall Sale 20% Off at the top. Then ask for changes one at a time, such as a warmer color or a wider crop, rather than starting over.
Upload references when you can. Gemini's newest model can use up to 14 reference images and keep up to four characters consistent Nano Banana 2.1 ↗, and ChatGPT lets you edit by chatting Neurohive, Images 2.0 ↗. A photo of your real product, your logo file and an example of a post you like will get you closer than any description.
Finally, decide on a format before you generate. Square images suit Instagram feeds, tall images suit stories and reels, and wide images suit website banners. Asking for the right shape up front saves you from awkward crops later.
- Say exactly what text you want, in quotes
- Name the platform and shape: square, tall or wide
- Upload a real photo of your product
- Change one thing per request
- Save prompts that work so you can reuse your style
Before you sign up
Check two things first: who can see your images, and whether you can use them commercially. Midjourney keeps images private only on Pro and Mega with Stealth Mode Midjourney plans ↗, Leonardo's free plan makes creations public Leonardo pricing ↗, and Ideogram includes private generation on Plus and Pro Ideogram pricing ↗. Adobe makes the strongest commercial safety claim for its own models Firefly plans ↗.
Never generate images of real people without their permission, and do not imitate another company's logo or trademark.
- Try the free plans of ChatGPT, Gemini and Firefly first
- Check whether your images are public by default
- Proofread every word inside an image
- Keep your prompts so you can recreate a style
- Watch credit expiry: Ideogram's unused priority credits expire monthly
What to look forward to
Image models are improving every few months. Two preliminary gpt-image-2.5 models already top Arena's leaderboard Arena image leaderboard ↗, and Google shipped Nano Banana 2.1 in October Nano Banana 2.1 ↗. Expect better long text, more consistent characters and sharper high resolution output to reach the consumer apps soon.
The competition
IdeogramFree; Plus from $15/month billed yearly ($20 monthly)
Ideogram has a free plan with weekly slow credits and one generation at a time, and Plus costs $20 a month, or $15 billed yearly, for 2,400 priority credits and private generation Ideogram pricing ↗. Unused priority credits expire at the end of each billing cycle Ideogram pricing ↗. It is no longer the clear leader it once was for text in images.
Leonardo.AiFree; Essential from $12/month
Leonardo offers 150 free tokens a day, but free creations are public Leonardo pricing ↗. Paid plans start at $12 a month for 8,500 tokens, with team plans from $24 a seat Leonardo pricing ↗. It suits people who want many style controls, but it is more complex than our picks.
CanvaPro $144/year for one person
Canva is great if you already design in it. The free plan includes up to 20 AI uses, and Pro is $144 a year with 10 times more AI Canva pricing ↗. AI allowances are shared across all of Canva's AI tools Canva pricing ↗, so it is better as a design app with AI than as a dedicated image generator.
GrokFree; SuperGrok $30/month
Grok Imagine, the image model behind Grok (listed under SpaceXAI on Arena), ranks fourth on Arena's text to image leaderboard Arena image leaderboard ↗. Its SuperGrok plan costs $30 a month according to a third party pricing roundup Grok pricing ↗, more than our pick, and we found less published detail on image limits, so we left it out for now.
