The Best AI Writing Tool

AI can draft your emails, website copy, social posts and proposals in seconds, and polish what you write yourself. Here is the tool we would pay for first, the best free option, and when a marketing platform is worth it.

We may earn a commission when you sign up through links on this page. It never changes our picks. How we pick

THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes. AI writing tools now produce solid first drafts and clean up your own writing, though you still need to check facts and add your voice. For most people we recommend Claude Pro at $20 a month, because Anthropic's models rank at or near the top of Arena's public creative writing leaderboard. If you mainly want to fix and polish what you write, Grammarly Pro at $12 a month is the better buy.

Businesses use AI writing tools daily for emails, marketing and documents, and strong free plans make it easy to start.

Claude

Best for most owners who want natural sounding drafts of emails, web pages, posts and proposals.

Claude is a general AI assistant, but writing is where it stands out. On Arena's creative writing leaderboard, updated October 8, 2026, Anthropic models take six of the top ten places, and Claude Opus 5.5 is second, just behind a preliminary Google model Arena creative writing ↗. Arena ranks models by blind votes from the public, so it reflects what readers actually prefer, though it is not a test of business writing specifically.

Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and includes Anthropic's top Opus model, unlimited projects and a Research feature Claude pricing ↗. Projects are useful for writing: you can save your brand guide, past posts and product details in one place so every draft starts from the same facts and tone. Research helps when a blog post or proposal needs current information.

The free plan lets you try Claude on the smaller Sonnet and Haiku models with up to five projects Claude pricing ↗. Paid plans use a rolling five hour usage window and weekly limits Claude pricing ↗, which most writers will not hit, but heavy daily users might. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • Top ranked models for creative writing on Arena
  • Projects keep your brand voice and facts in one place
  • Annual plan cuts the price to $17 a month
  • Also handles research, analysis and long documents

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Top Opus model not on the free plan
  • Does not check your writing inside other apps
  • Weekly limits on paid plans
Budget pickStarts at $12/month for Pro

Grammarly

Best for people who write their own emails and documents and want them clearer, correct and on tone.

Grammarly works where you already write. It offers a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and add ons for Microsoft Office and Google Docs Grammarly ↗. That makes it the easiest way to improve every email and document without copying text into a chatbot.

Grammarly Pro is $12 a month with a 7 day free trial Grammarly plans ↗. It adds tone adjustment, full sentence rewrites, plagiarism and AI text detection, and 2,000 AI prompts per member a month, plus one style guide and one brand tone for a small team Grammarly plans ↗. The free plan includes spelling and grammar correction, tone feedback and 100 AI prompts a month Grammarly plans ↗.

Grammarly is now part of Superhuman Grammarly ↗, and its Enterprise plan is sold through Superhuman Go Grammarly plans ↗. The plans page does not list annual prices Grammarly plans ↗. Grammarly is a polishing tool first; for drafting a full blog post from scratch, a chatbot like Claude does more.

Why we like it

  • Works in your browser, desktop, Word and Google Docs
  • Only $12 a month
  • Plagiarism and AI text detection included
  • 7 day free trial

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Better at polishing than drafting
  • Annual prices not listed
  • Team features limited on Pro
Best free optionFree; Plus starts at $20/month

ChatGPT

Best for writing help that costs nothing, if you can tolerate ads.

ChatGPT's free plan is the most generous free writing tool we found. OpenAI's pricing page says Free includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails ChatGPT pricing ↗. For writing, that is what matters: you can draft, rewrite and shorten as much as you like. Uploads, image creation, deep research and memory are limited on the free plan ChatGPT pricing ↗.

The trade off is ads. An October 2026 pricing roundup says ads appear on the Free and Go plans, while Plus is ad free AI Business Weekly ↗. Free also has a shorter context window, about 12 pages of input in standard mode ChatGPT pricing ↗, so long documents may need a paid plan. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month if you outgrow it OpenAI help, Plus ↗.

Why we like it

  • Unlimited everyday text chats
  • No credit card needed
  • Easy upgrade to the full ChatGPT

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Shows ads
  • Shorter input limit, about 12 pages
  • Limited uploads and memory
Upgrade pickStarts at $69/month per seat, $59 billed yearly

Jasper

Best for marketing teams that publish a lot and need a consistent brand voice.

Jasper is built for marketing content rather than general chat. The Pro plan is $69 per seat a month, or $59 billed yearly, includes one seat and two Brand Voices, and comes with a 7 day free trial Jasper pricing ↗. Brand Voices let you teach the tool how your company writes, so posts and emails from different staff sound alike.

Business plans have custom pricing, unlimited brand voices and extra seats arranged through sales Jasper pricing ↗. Annual billing requires a 12 month commitment Jasper pricing ↗. Jasper costs more than three times as much as Claude Pro, so it only makes sense if you produce marketing content at volume and want brand controls built in.

Why we like it

  • Brand Voices for consistent marketing copy
  • Built for marketing teams
  • 7 day free trial

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • $69 per seat a month
  • Annual plans need a 12 month commitment
  • Overkill for occasional writing

Prices and features from each vendor’s site, checked Oct 9, 2026. Prices change often.

Who this is for

This guide is for owners, marketers and staff who write for work: emails to customers, website pages, social posts, newsletters, product descriptions, proposals and policies. It covers two types of tools. Drafting tools, like Claude and ChatGPT, write from a short brief. Editing tools, like Grammarly and QuillBot, improve what you have already written.

Many people end up using one of each: a chatbot for first drafts and Grammarly for polish as they type. If you need SEO specific content planning, see our guide to AI SEO tools.

You do not need to be a strong writer to benefit. Owners who dread writing often get the most value, because the tool removes the hardest step: getting started. Confident writers save time too, mostly on routine messages and rewrites.

Why you should trust us

We read each vendor's pricing and plan pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. For writing quality we used Arena's creative writing leaderboard, which ranks models from blind public votes and was updated October 8, 2026 Arena creative writing ↗. Every fact links to its source.

We have not yet tested these tools hands on for this guide. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this page with sample drafts for common business writing tasks. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.

How we picked

We started with the general assistants that most people use for writing, then added the best known writing specialists: Grammarly, Jasper, QuillBot, Copy.ai, Writer and Notion AI. For each one we asked what a small business gets for its money and how good the writing is likely to be.

We weighted quality of the underlying model heavily, using Arena's creative writing rankings as a check Arena creative writing ↗. We also looked at where each tool works, because a tool inside your email and documents gets used more than one you must open separately.

  • Writing quality, using public leaderboards as a check
  • Ability to match your tone and brand voice
  • Works where you write: browser, email, Word, Google Docs
  • Clear pricing and a fair entry plan
  • A useful free plan or trial
  • Team features such as style guides when you add staff

What an AI writing tool can and can't do today

AI writing tools are excellent at first drafts, rewriting for a different tone, shortening long text, turning notes into a polished email, and producing many versions of a headline. Editing tools can catch grammar mistakes, adjust tone and check for plagiarism: Grammarly Pro and QuillBot Premium both include plagiarism checks Grammarly plans ↗ QuillBot pricing ↗.

What they can't do well: know facts about your business you have not given them, guarantee accuracy, or sound exactly like you without examples. AI drafts can also sound generic. The fix is to give the tool your details and samples of your own writing, then edit the result.

A good rule is to let AI handle the blank page and the cleanup, and keep the judgment for yourself. Use a drafting tool to get a first version in seconds, edit it for accuracy and personality, then run it through an editing tool for typos and tone. That workflow takes a few minutes per email or post and keeps a human responsible for what goes out under your name.

How to get better writing from AI

Give the tool a short brief: who is reading, what you want them to do, the key facts and the length. A prompt like write a 120 word email to past customers announcing our new Saturday hours, friendly tone, end with a booking link, will beat write an email about our hours every time.

Feed it examples. Paste two or three emails or posts you liked and ask it to match the style. In Claude, save them in a project Claude pricing ↗; in Jasper, set up a Brand Voice Jasper pricing ↗; in Grammarly Pro, add a brand tone Grammarly plans ↗. Then read every draft out loud before you send it.

  • Say who the reader is and what you want them to do
  • Include facts: prices, dates, names, links
  • Paste samples of your own writing
  • Ask for three versions and pick the best
  • Read the final draft aloud before sending

Before you sign up

Try before you pay. Claude, ChatGPT and Grammarly all have free plans Claude pricing ↗ ChatGPT pricing ↗ Grammarly plans ↗, and Grammarly Pro and Jasper Pro offer 7 day trials Grammarly plans ↗ Jasper pricing ↗. Use them on real work for a week.

Be careful with private information. Do not paste client records or confidential contracts into a personal plan. For teams, look for business controls: Grammarly Enterprise adds data loss prevention and single sign on Grammarly plans ↗, and Claude's Team plan supports 2 to 150 people with admin controls Claude pricing ↗.

  • Test free plans on real tasks first
  • Check annual commitments before you sign
  • Keep confidential data out of personal plans
  • Fact check every number and claim
  • Disclose AI use where your industry requires it

What to look forward to

Writing tools are moving into the apps you already use and taking on more of the job, from drafting replies inside email to updating documents on their own. Notion now includes an agent on its Business plan Notion pricing ↗, and Grammarly's Enterprise plan promises proactive AI that works everywhere Grammarly plans ↗. Models keep improving too: a preliminary Gemini 4 model now tops Arena's creative writing ranking Arena creative writing ↗.

The competition

QuillBotFree; Premium $8.33/month billed yearly

QuillBot is a cheap paraphrasing and summarizing tool. Premium costs $8.33 a month billed yearly and adds full paraphrasing, a 6,000 word summarizer and 25,000 words a month of plagiarism checks QuillBot pricing ↗. The free plan paraphrases only 100 words at a time QuillBot pricing ↗. It is handy for students and quick rewrites, but less useful for original business writing.

Copy.aiStarts at $29/month ($24 billed yearly) for 5 seats

Copy.ai's Chat plan is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for five seats with unlimited chat words Copy.ai pricing ↗. Its next plan jumps to $1,000 a month Copy.ai pricing ↗, so it is aimed at sales and marketing teams building workflows rather than small businesses.

Notion AIIncluded with Notion Business at $20/member/month

Notion AI is useful if your team already works in Notion, but full AI access needs the Business plan at $20 per member a month; Free and Plus only get a limited trial Notion pricing ↗.

WriterNot stated (Starter priced per seat)

Writer is an enterprise writing platform. Its Starter plan supports up to five users with a 14 day free trial, but the plans page does not list prices Writer plans ↗, which makes it hard for a small business to compare.

Google GeminiFree; Google AI Plus from $4.99/month

Google Gemini's free plan is generous and Google's newest model leads Arena's creative writing ranking in preliminary results Google AI plans ↗ Arena creative writing ↗. It is a fine free alternative, especially for Google Docs users, but we prefer Claude's paid writing experience and ChatGPT's unlimited free text chats.
