AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace travel agents?

Partly. AI chatbots now draft itineraries, research destinations and write marketing, and BLS says travelers using AI tools to plan their own trips will limit demand. But BLS still expects little or no change in travel agent jobs from 2025 to 2035, because people keep paying for personal advice and for someone to fix things when a trip goes wrong.

Quick questions

Will AI replace travel agents?

Not entirely. BLS projects little or no change in travel agent jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 5,900 openings a year [2]. It says AI tools let travelers book their own trips, which limits demand, but people still rely on agents for personalized advice and for help when travel problems come up [2].

Can ChatGPT plan and book a whole trip?

It can draft the plan, and agent features can now act across apps with your approval [3] [4]. Booking is still the weak spot: live fares come from booking systems, and nobody at the chatbot company will rebook you when a flight is cancelled. That gap is where agents earn their fee.

Will AI replace travel agents in 10 years?

Simple bookings will keep moving to self service, as they did when online booking arrived. In 2016 BLS projected a 12% drop in travel agent jobs from 2014 to 2024 because of online booking [9], yet the 2025 count was 61,500 agents [2]. Complex trips, groups and luxury travel are where agents are holding on.

How many travel agents are there in the US?

BLS counted 61,500 travel agent jobs in 2025 [2]. Industry groups say official counts miss many home based independent contractors; in 2018 ASTA cited a Census figure of about 105,000 agency employees and IBISWorld estimated about 232,800 agents [8].

Is becoming a travel agent a good career with AI?

It can work if you specialize. The median travel agent earned $50,160 in May 2025 [2]. Agents who use AI for research and marketing [2] [4] and spend their time on niches like cruises, groups or complex international trips have the strongest case for clients to pay them.
