AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace project managers?
No, but the admin side of the job is going fast. Tools like Microsoft Planner's agent, Asana AI, Jira with Rovo and ClickUp Brain already chase updates, break down work and write status reports, while aligning stakeholders, negotiating and leading the team stay with you. BLS still projects 7% job growth for project management specialists from 2025 to 2035, with about 76,500 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (13-1082.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Request and review project updates from the team | AI does this today | ClickUp, Asana AI | ClickUp's prebuilt stand up and weekly report agents ping teammates for updates and compile them into one post, so the chasing you used to do by message is automated. [6][4] |
| Report project status, budget and issues to managers | AI does this today | Microsoft 365 Copilot, ClickUp | Planner's agent writes a status report for the last week, month or quarter from the plan itself, and Asana drafts stakeholder summaries from live task data, leaving you to check the tone and the bad news. [3][4][8] |
| Develop or update project plans with goals, schedules and staffing | AI helps, you check | Microsoft 365 Copilot, Atlassian Rovo | Planner can generate tasks from a goal and Rovo can split a Jira item into smaller pieces in one click, but what the project must deliver and by when is a call you make with the sponsor. [3][5] |
| Plan, schedule and coordinate work to hit deadlines | AI helps, you check | Motion, Microsoft Planner agent | Asana flags approval delays and schedule slips before a milestone is at risk, but sequencing work around real people, vacations and politics is still your judgment. [3][4] |
| Monitor milestones and deliverables | AI helps, you check | Asana AI | Predictive monitoring in Asana reviews completion and blockers and shows which projects need attention, but deciding whether a slipping milestone is a real problem takes context. [4] |
| Create status presentations for clients or the team | AI helps, you check | Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gamma | Copilot in PowerPoint can draft a full deck with speaker notes from your project plan file, but Microsoft itself warns the content could be wrong, so you check every number before presenting. [9] |
| Produce and share project documents | AI helps, you check | ClickUp, Notion AI | Rovo can turn a Confluence page into Jira work items and ClickUp Brain summarizes threads and boards, but the scope document people sign off on needs your review. [5][6] |
| Schedule and run project meetings | AI helps, you check | ClickUp, Fireflies.ai, Zoom AI assistant (ZoomMate) | AI notetakers join the call, write the recap and create follow up tasks, but keeping a meeting on track and getting a decision out of the room is you. [6] |
| Figure out the people, tools and money a project needs | AI helps, you check | Asana Workload Management | Workload views show who is over capacity, but asking for more budget or headcount is a negotiation with leaders. [4] |
| Assign duties and responsibilities to team members | AI helps, you check | Microsoft 365 Copilot, Asana AI | Planner even lets you hand a task to the AI agent itself, but matching work to each person's strengths and growth is a manager's call. [3][4] |
| Track costs and prepare budget estimates and cost reports | AI helps, you check | Planview Anvi | Planview Anvi can be asked to analyze a project's budget variance and forecast completion costs, but explaining an overrun and choosing what to cut needs a person who answers for it. [14][8] |
| Meet stakeholders to set project requirements and goals | Still human | None | Getting sponsors who want different things to agree on one scope is about trust and persuasion, not data. |
| Work with the team to find and fix problems | Still human | None | When a vendor slips or two teams clash, someone has to get people in a room and own the fix. |
| Negotiate with stakeholders or suppliers for resources | Still human | None | Trading favors, deadlines and dollars depends on relationships and reading the other side. |
| Hire project staff and choose vendors or consultants | Still human | None | Picking who you will depend on for months, and signing the contract, carries accountability AI cannot hold. |
| Give team members feedback on their performance | AI helps, you check | Lattice AI Agent | Lattice's agent drafts review answers from 1:1 notes, feedback and goals with sources, but it cannot pick ratings or submit, and the honest conversation that keeps someone motivated is still yours. [13] |

Quick questions
Will AI replace project managers?
Not the role, but much of the paperwork. Gartner predicted in 2019 that 80% of today's project management work, mainly data collection, tracking and reporting, would be eliminated by 2030 [8]. BLS still projects 7% growth for project management specialists from 2025 to 2035, with about 76,500 openings a year [2].
What AI tools do project managers use?
Microsoft Planner's agent generates tasks and writes status reports [3], Asana AI drafts stakeholder summaries and flags risks [4], Jira's Rovo breaks work into smaller items [5] and ClickUp agents collect stand up updates [6]. Most need a paid AI add on, such as a Copilot license for Planner [3].
Is project management a good career with AI?
Yes for people who lead, not just track. Median pay was $102,320 in May 2025 [2]. In PMI research with 500 project professionals, heavy GenAI users were far more likely to report productivity gains (93%) than light users (58%) [7].
Can AI write my status reports for me?
It can write the first draft. Planner's agent builds a report from your plan once it has at least 10 tasks [3], and Asana generates reports from current task and milestone data [4]. You still decide what the sponsor needs to hear and fix anything the tool misread.
Do I still need a PMP certification if AI does the admin work?
A credential still helps you stand out. BLS says certification is not always required but shows competency to employers and clients [2]. As routine tracking gets automated, the judgment and leadership a certification signals become a bigger share of the job [8].
