Will AI replace medical transcriptionists?

The typing part, mostly yes. Speech recognition and ambient AI scribes now turn a doctor's dictation or a whole visit into a draft note, and AI phone agents and fax readers cover some front office work, while BLS expects medical transcriptionist jobs to fall 4% from 2025 to 2035. What remains is checking and correcting those drafts, and a 2025 study found errors in 70% of AI draft notes it tested.

Where medical transcriptionists can move next

GROWING · $68,020

Health information technologist or medical registrar

Registrars and health information technologists manage and analyze records rather than type them, and your command of medical terminology and report structure carries straight over. Many employers prefer a professional certification, which usually means a program and an exam. [8]

GROWING · $45,690

Medical assistant

Taking vitals, prepping patients and helping in exam rooms needs a person on site, and you already know charting and clinical language. Pay is similar to transcription and many programs take a year or less. [9]

GROWING · $51,140

Medical records specialist

Coding and abstracting records builds on the same knowledge of reports and terminology, and BLS still projects growth. BLS also notes AI powered tools are making coding more efficient, so pair it with a coding credential and audit skills. [10]

Quick questions

Will AI replace medical transcriptionists?

It is shrinking the job rather than ending it overnight. BLS projects employment to fall 4% from 2025 to 2035 because speech technology lets physicians document visits themselves in real time, though it still expects about 6,200 openings a year, all from people leaving the field [2].

Is medical transcription a dying career in 2026?

The old role of typing from tapes is fading, and the median pay was $40,410 in May 2025 [2]. The work that remains is editing and auditing AI drafts, and the main professional group already offers credentials for people working beyond traditional transcription, including scribe and auditor micro credentials [7].

What AI is replacing medical transcription?

Two kinds of tools. Microsoft Dragon Copilot combines dictation with ambient recording that turns a visit into a transcript, a note and an orders list [3], and also drafts referral letters and after visit summaries [4]. Abridge writes notes inside Epic and ties each part to the source conversation so the clinician can verify it [5].

How accurate are AI medical scribes?

Not accurate enough to skip review. In a 2025 JMIR study of two commercial ambient scribes, reviewers found 127 errors across 31 of 44 draft notes, and missing information was the most common problem [6]. The authors warn that omissions are the hardest errors to spot after a busy clinic [6].

What can a medical transcriptionist do instead?

Health information technologists and medical registrars earn a median $68,020 with 16% projected growth [8]. Medical assistants earn $45,690 with 13% growth [9], and medical records specialists earn $51,140 with 8% growth, though AI is also reaching coding [10].
