AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace radiologists?

No, and the famous prediction that it would has aged badly. Radiology has more FDA cleared AI tools than any other specialty, and they flag urgent scans, sort mammograms by risk, suggest scan protocols, catch possible missed findings and draft report impressions, but a radiologist still reads the images, signs the report and performs procedures. BLS projects radiologist jobs to grow 3% from 2025 to 2035, while studies expect a shortage of radiologists to last for decades.

Where radiologists can move next

GROWING · $123,860

Medical and health services manager

Radiologists who lead imaging departments, choose AI tools and run quality programs can move into health system leadership, where physician judgment on technology is in demand. It is a big pay cut from clinical radiology, so most do it part time or late in their careers. [9]

Median pay $123,860 · outlook +24%

GROWING · $107,310

Health specialties professor

Teaching residents and medical students how to read images, and how to use and question AI, is work only experienced radiologists can do. Academic posts often mix teaching with clinical reading, which softens the pay gap. [11]

Median pay $107,310 · outlook +18%

GROWING · $103,410

Medical scientist

Imaging research, including testing and validating AI models, needs physicians who understand both the images and the clinical stakes. Your MD and imaging expertise transfer directly, though pay is far below clinical practice. [10]

Quick questions

Will AI replace radiologists?

Not on current evidence. Geoffrey Hinton said in 2016 that hospitals should stop training radiologists, but the US radiologist workforce grew about 10% over the next decade and Hinton has since walked the claim back [8]. BLS projects radiologist jobs to grow 3% from 2025 to 2035 [2].

Is radiology still a good specialty to go into with AI?

By the numbers, yes. The median radiologist earned $420,860 in May 2025 [2], and Fortune reported an average of $571,000 in 2025 citing Medscape [8]. Studies in the Journal of the American College of Radiology project the gap between radiologist supply and imaging demand will last through 2055 without action [7].

How many FDA cleared AI tools are there for radiology?

A lot. Of 1,430 AI enabled devices the FDA authorized through December 2025, 1,094, about 76.5%, were in radiology [3]. Most help with detection, triage or measurement, and the radiologist stays responsible for the read.

Can AI read mammograms instead of a radiologist?

Not on its own. In the MASAI trial of over 100,000 Swedish women, AI sorted low risk screens to a single reader and high risk screens to two readers, cutting screen reading work by 44% and finding more cancers [5]. The lead author stressed that at least one human radiologist still read every screen [5].

How much time can AI save a radiologist?

Vendor numbers are promising but not independent. Rad AI says its tool cuts dictated words in the impression by 80% to 90% and impression time by more than half, with one practice reporting 11% more RVUs per shift [6]. Radiology case loads rose 25% from 2018 to early 2025, so much of that time is absorbed by rising volume [8].
