AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace electricians?

No. AI cannot pull wire through conduit, land conductors in a panel or climb a lift, so the hands on core of the job stays human. Software now helps with takeoffs, design routing, code lookups, fault finding and office work, and BLS projects electrician jobs to grow 9% from 2025 to 2035 with about 72,700 openings a year, helped by new data centers.

Prepare sketches and cost estimates for materials and laborAI helps, you checkTogal.AITakeoff software like Togal can find and count outlets, switches, exit signs and light fixtures on a PDF plan set, but you still price the job, add labor and catch what the drawings miss. [3]
Handle business paperwork such as records, reports, invoices and supply ordersAI helps, you checkServiceTitan AtlasField service software can now run reports from a plain English request, review invoices and suggest who to dispatch, but the owner or office manager still decides and answers for the books. [4]
Take service calls and book customer appointmentsAI helps, you checkJobber ReceptionistAI receptionists answer calls and texts around the clock and book visits from your calendar settings, then pass calls with urgent keywords you set, like no power, straight to a person. [5]
Plan wiring and equipment layout from blueprints and local codesAI helps, you checkAugmentaOn big jobs like data centers, design software such as Augmenta now routes conduit and builds feeder schedules inside the building model, but fitting circuits around framing and ductwork on site under your local code is still your call. [11]
Run conduit and pull wire through walls, ceilings and trenchesStill humanNoneBending conduit, fishing wire through finished walls and digging trench is physical work in cramped, changing spaces that no shipping robot does.
Connect wires to breakers, panels, transformers and motorsStill humanNoneTerminating conductors correctly, torqued and labeled, in live equipment is hands on work where a mistake can start a fire or injure someone.
Work from ladders, lifts, scaffolds and roofs to install and repair fixturesStill humanNoneClimbing, balancing and working overhead on every kind of building is exactly the kind of work AI software cannot reach.
Test circuits and continuity with meters and testersStill humanNoneSmart meters can log readings, but choosing what to test, applying the probes safely and reading the result in context is still the electrician's job.
Diagnose and fix broken systems and equipmentAI helps, you checkSiemens Industrial CopilotIn plants, maintenance assistants such as Siemens Industrial Copilot give step by step troubleshooting and repair guidance, but opening boxes, tracing circuits and making the repair on site is still hands on work. [14]

Construction manager

Running whole projects means coordinating trades, schedules and owners on site, which keeps the work people centered. Field experience reading plans and managing crews is a common route in, though many employers also want a degree in construction or a related field. [8]

GROWING · $95,320

Electrical power-line installer and repairer

Utilities need line workers to build and fix the grid that new data centers and electrification rely on, and the work is outdoors, at height and impossible to automate. Your electrical knowledge transfers, but you would go through utility apprenticeship and climbing training. [9]

STEADY · $74,690

Electrical inspector

Electrical inspectors check installed wiring, lighting, solar and generating equipment against code, a job built on code knowledge and on site sign off. Many come from the trade, though BLS expects little change in inspector jobs and median pay for all construction inspectors is $74,690. [10]

Quick questions

Will AI replace electricians in the next 10 years?

Very unlikely. BLS projects electrician jobs to grow 9% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 72,700 openings a year [2]. The core of the job is physical installation, testing and code compliance in buildings, which AI software does not do [1].

Are AI data centers creating more work for electricians?

Yes. Quartz reported in 2026 that the AI data center buildout is pushing up demand and pay for electricians [6]. An Indeed analysis cited by eWeek found data center installation and maintenance jobs advertise about $10 an hour more than similar jobs elsewhere, and JLL estimates 2.1 million skilled trade positions could go unfilled by 2030 [7].

What AI tools do electricians use?

Mostly office and planning tools. Estimators use takeoff software like Togal to count devices on plans [3], contractors use ServiceTitan's Atlas for reports and dispatch [4], and small shops use AI receptionists like Jobber's [5]. On larger jobs, Augmenta routes conduit in the building model [11], UpCodes Copilot answers code questions with cited sections [13], and plant electricians get troubleshooting help from tools like Siemens Industrial Copilot [14].

Can AI do electrical estimates?

It can do the counting. Togal says it finds and counts outlets, switches, exit signs and fixtures across drawings and claims takeoffs 5 times faster [3], but that is a vendor claim. You still set labor, check the counts against the specs and decide the final price.

Is becoming an electrician worth it in 2026?

For most people who like hands on work, yes. The median electrician earned $63,190 in May 2025 [2], the job needs an apprenticeship rather than a college degree, and the AI boom is adding work instead of taking it [6] [7].
