AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace photographers?
Partly. AI already culls a shoot, applies your editing style across hundreds of frames and makes many of the generic images stock agencies used to sell, but clients still hire a person to direct people, light a scene and be there on the day. BLS expects photographer jobs to dip 1% from 2025 to 2035, with about 10,700 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (27-4021.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review sets of photographs to select the best work | AI does this today | Aftershoot, Adobe Lightroom | Culling tools flag blurry frames, closed eyes and near duplicates and rate the keepers in minutes, so you skim their picks instead of clicking through every frame. [3][4] |
| Apply color and exposure edits across a whole shoot | AI does this today | Imagen, Aftershoot | Style editing services learn from thousands of your past Lightroom edits and apply your look to a new wedding or session, leaving you to check a batch and fix crops. [5][3] |
| License photographs through stock photo agencies | AI does this today | Adobe Firefly, Midjourney | Image generators now produce much of the generic imagery buyers once licensed, and BLS expects stock photography to be partly replaced by AI images. [2][9] |
| Retouch photos and remove distractions | AI helps, you check | Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop | Generative Remove in Lightroom paints out signs, cables and passersby in seconds, but it still struggles with faces, hands and feet, so skin and portrait retouching needs your eye. [6][7] |
| Transfer photos to a computer for editing, archiving and delivery | AI helps, you check | Adobe Lightroom | Lightroom can reject misfires, receipts and badly exposed frames as cards import, but backups, folder names and client gallery delivery are still a routine you own. [4] |
| Handle office work such as booking clients, keeping books and ordering supplies | AI helps, you check | HoneyBook AI Composer | Studio CRMs now draft inquiry replies in your voice and flag which leads are likely to book, but quoting a package and answering a nervous couple is still you. [8] |
| Consult clients to set project goals, locations and equipment needs | Still human | None | Turning a brief or a bride's wish list into a shot plan takes listening, scouting and trust that a client gives to a person. |
| Plan composition and arrange subjects, props and lighting | Still human | None | Deciding where people stand, what goes in the frame and how the light falls is the creative judgment clients are paying for. |
| Photograph individuals, families and small groups in studio or on location | Still human | None | Getting a stiff executive or a restless toddler to relax happens in the room, and a real event can only be photographed by someone who is there. |
| Create artificial light with flashes and reflectors | Still human | None | Placing strobes, bouncing light and fixing harsh shadows on site is physical, hands on work. |
| Adjust aperture, shutter speed and focus for each scene | AI helps, you check | Sony Alpha AI autofocus | Cameras with AI subject recognition now find and track eyes, bodies, animals and vehicles on their own, but choosing how much is sharp and how motion looks is still a creative call you make shot by shot. [14] |
| Set up, test and maintain cameras and lighting gear | Still human | None | Mounting gear, checking batteries and cards and fixing a failed flash before a shoot needs hands and a careful routine. |
| Fly drones for aerial photos and video while following the rules | AI helps, you check | Skydio | Autonomous drones avoid obstacles and fly much of the job themselves, but commercial work still needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate and a pilot who can take control and answers for every flight. [15][10] |
| Set up exhibitions to display and sell work | Still human | None | Choosing prints, hanging a show and talking with buyers and gallery owners is relationship work. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace photographers?
Not as a whole job. BLS projects photographer employment to fall about 1% from 2025 to 2035 and says some stock photography will be partly replaced by AI images, while demand for portrait and commercial photographers will remain [2]. About 10,700 openings a year are still expected, all from people leaving the field [2].
Are photographers already losing work to AI?
Some are. In a 2026 survey by the UK Association of Photographers, 58% of about 600 responding members said they had lost work to generative AI, and commissioned images licensed by members fell 65% [9]. Commercial and stock work feels this first; weddings, events and portraits still need someone on site.
What AI tools do photographers use?
Common ones include Aftershoot and Lightroom Assisted Culling for picking keepers [3] [4], Imagen for applying your editing style [5], Lightroom Generative Remove for cleaning up distractions [6] and HoneyBook's AI Composer for drafting client emails [8]. Each still expects you to review the result.
Can AI edit photos in my own style?
Yes, with enough history. Imagen asks for at least 3,000 consistently edited photos in a Lightroom Classic catalog and suggests a test run of 50 to 100 photos with a review step before trusting it [5]. It mainly sets sliders like exposure, white balance and tone curves, and crops often still need a manual fix [5].
Is photography still a good career with AI?
It can be, if you sell what AI cannot fake. The median photographer earned $44,660 in May 2025 and BLS expects self employed photographers to grow in number [2]. Skills like drone work, which needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate [10], and fast AI assisted delivery help you stand out.
