AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace lawyers?
No. Legal AI now handles first pass document review, research plans and contract redlines, but courts have sanctioned lawyers for filing AI invented cases and the ABA says the lawyer must check every output. BLS projects lawyer jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035 and expects automation to free lawyers for other work rather than cut demand.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (23-1011.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search and examine records and large document sets to find the key facts | AI does this today | CoCounsel Legal, Harvey | Tools like CoCounsel's tabular review and Harvey Vault now run the same questions across thousands of uploaded documents and return a sortable table, which you spot check instead of reading every page. [3][4] |
| Handle practice administration such as time entries, invoices and court deadlines | AI does this today | Clio | Clio Manage now creates time entries, drafts and checks invoices and pulls deadlines out of court documents into the calendar, leaving you to approve them. [6] |
| Research statutes, case law and regulations that bear on a case | AI helps, you check | CoCounsel Legal, Lexis+ AI with Protégé | Deep research agents build multi step research plans with cited sources, but Stanford found even legal research tools gave wrong answers on 17% to 34% of test questions, so you read every authority yourself. [3][7] |
| Draft and review contracts, wills, deeds, leases and other legal documents | AI helps, you check | Spellbook, Harvey | Spellbook drafts clauses and redlines a contract inside Word against your playbook, and Harvey drafts from your prompt, but the signature on the advice is yours and Harvey itself calls human verification critical. [4][5] |
| Write legal briefs and opinions and file appeals | AI helps, you check | CoCounsel Legal, Lexis+ AI with Protégé, Harvey | AI can outline arguments and produce a first draft, but under ABA Formal Opinion 512 you must verify citations and analysis before anything reaches a court. [3][9] |
| Evaluate findings and build the strategy and arguments for a case | AI helps, you check | CoCounsel Legal | Thomson Reuters pitches Deep Research as building the foundations of an argument with human oversight, which speeds the groundwork while the theory of the case stays your call. [3] |
| Advise clients on their rights, obligations and business deals | Still human | None | Advice has to fit the client's goals, risk tolerance and facts they may not share with a machine, and the lawyer answers for it under the rules of professional conduct. |
| Predict the likely outcome of a case from precedent and decide whether to sue or defend | AI helps, you check | Lex Machina | Analytics tools like Lex Machina use past case data to show how a judge tends to rule on motions and how long cases take, but weighing that against a jury, opposing counsel and a client's appetite for risk is your call and your responsibility. [13] |
| Interview clients and witnesses to establish the facts | Still human | None | People reveal the facts that matter to someone they trust, and spotting an evasive answer in the room is a human skill. |
| Negotiate settlements and contract terms with the other side | AI helps, you check | Luminance Autopilot | Luminance showed its AI negotiating a routine NDA with another AI in minutes, with people only signing at the end, but settlements and real deals turn on reading the other side and knowing when to walk away. [14] |
| Represent clients in court, select jurors, argue motions and question witnesses | Still human | None | Only a licensed attorney can stand up for a client in court, and live testimony and juror selection depend on reacting to people in real time. |
| Supervise paralegals and legal assistants | Still human | None | Supervision now includes setting AI policies, training staff and checking their AI use, duties the ABA places on managing lawyers. [9] |
| Probate wills and advise executors and administrators of estates | Still human | None | Estate work means guiding grieving families through court steps and family disputes, where tact and accountability matter more than speed. |
| Act as trustee, guardian or executor for a client | Still human | None | A fiduciary role carries personal legal duties to the people it protects, which cannot be handed to software. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace lawyers?
Not on current evidence. BLS projects lawyer employment to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, with about 28,700 openings a year, and says automation of routine work should let lawyers spend more time on other parts of the job rather than reduce demand [2]. AI is taking over pieces of the work, such as first pass document review [3] [4].
Will AI replace lawyers in 10 years?
The tasks most likely to shrink are research, document review, first drafts and routine contract negotiation, which AI already speeds up [3] [4] [5] [14]. The parts tied to a license, such as giving advice, signing filings and appearing in court, stay with lawyers. Junior work built on high volume review is the most exposed, so new lawyers should learn to supervise these tools.
Can lawyers get in trouble for using ChatGPT or other AI?
Yes, if they file what it produces without checking. Courts had issued an estimated 712 decisions about hallucinated content by late 2025, with typical sanctions of $1,500 to $5,000 and one Oregon fine of $15,500 [8]. ABA Formal Opinion 512 says lawyers must review AI output, including citations, and protect client information they put into AI tools [9].
Can lawyers bill clients for work done with AI?
They can bill the actual time spent prompting and reviewing AI output, but ABA Formal Opinion 512 says fees must stay reasonable and lawyers generally cannot bill for time spent learning a tool [9]. A flat fee that ignores big AI time savings may also be unreasonable [9].
