AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace web developers?

Not the job, but the easy end of it. AI builders now produce simple business sites from a description and coding agents write tests and prototypes, and BLS says this may soften growth by letting non developers handle basic web work. BLS still projects web developer jobs to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035, because custom sites, security and performance need someone who owns the code.

Build simple brochure and small business sites from a content briefAI does this todayWix, Framer, SquarespaceWix's AI builder produces a full site with pages, layout, copy and images from a short description and can add booking or a store, so a basic site no longer needs custom code. [2][9]
Create clickable prototypes and models of a site or web appAI does this todayLovable, Bolt.new, ReplitApp builders like Lovable turn a plain English description into a working prototype in minutes, which you then review with the client before real build work starts. [8]
Run site tests after each change and document the resultsAI does this todayClaude Code, GitHub CopilotCoding agents write and run automated tests across a project and report what failed, so your work moves to deciding which failures matter. [4][5]
Write front end and back end code for websites and web appsAI helps, you checkClaude Code, GitHub Copilot, CursorAgents plan changes across many files and open pull requests, and 73% of developers in Stack Overflow's 2026 survey use them daily, yet only 16% trust AI for most tasks, so you review every change. Check code for valid structure, web standards and browser compatibilityAI helps, you checkGitHub Copilot, FramerAI review catches common mistakes and Framer checks pages for typos and SEO gaps before publishing, but testing on real devices and odd browsers still falls to you. [5][10]
Build the databases behind web applicationsAI helps, you checkClaude Code, LovableAgents can draft a schema and the code that talks to it, but a bad data model is painful to undo, so you decide how the data is structured. [4][8]

Quick questions

Will AI replace web developers?

Not according to BLS, which projects web developer jobs to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035 [2] [3]. It does say AI may soften that growth by making developers more productive and letting people in other jobs handle basic web tasks [2]. Simple sites are the most exposed part of the work.

Will AI website builders like Wix replace web developers?

For simple sites, largely yes. Wix builds a full site from a description and lets owners refine it by chatting with its AI agent [9]. But reviewers report AI edits making unwanted changes [11], and custom features, integrations and security still need a developer.

Will AI replace web developers in 10 years?

Expect fewer jobs building basic sites and more work directing AI agents and reviewing their output. Developers have already adopted agents fast: JetBrains found 39% of professional developers used Claude Code at work in 2026 [7]. The people who decide what to build and keep it secure are hardest to replace.

Do developers trust AI written code?

Only partly. In Stack Overflow's 2026 survey, 48% said they trust AI when they can easily check the answer, but just 16% trust it for most tasks [6]. That gap is why reviewing and testing AI code is now a core web developer skill.

Is web development still a good career in 2026?

Yes, with caveats. Web developers earned a median of $92,650 in May 2025, and BLS expects about 5,300 openings a year [2] [3]. Many developers are moving toward security, full stack application work or systems analysis, which BLS projects to grow faster [3] [13].
