AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace claims adjusters?
Not the whole job, but fewer adjusters will handle more claims. Tools like CCC and Tractable already write car repair estimates from photos and Lemonade's AI pays some simple claims in seconds, yet disputed coverage, recorded statements, reserves and settlement talks stay with a licensed person. BLS projects a 5 percent drop in jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 20,900 openings a year.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (13-1031.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspect property damage and create or review damage estimates | AI helps, you check | CCC Estimate-STP, Tractable, Xactimate | Tools like CCC Estimate-STP and Tractable turn a policyholder's photos into a full repair estimate in seconds for minor car damage, but home losses, hidden damage and code upgrades still need an adjuster's eye and a review in tools like Xactimate. [1][2][11][12] |
| Review police reports, medical records and bills | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, ChatGPT | Claims tools like Wisedocs sort, remove duplicates from and summarize medical records up to 70% faster, but even the vendor has people check each summary, and missing one prior injury changes the claim. [5][15] |
| Analyze investigation findings and write reports and recommendations | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT | AI drafts a clean claim report from your notes and attached documents, but the recommendation to pay, deny or refer carries your name and your license. [5][10] |
| Enter payments, reserves and file notes into the claim system | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT | Transcription tools turn a call with a claimant into a summary you can paste into file notes, but OpenAI says transcripts can contain mistakes, and file notes are evidence if the claim is disputed. [6] |
| Spot questionable claims and refer them to investigators | AI helps, you check | Shift Technology | Fraud software like Shift Technology scores every claim and explains its alerts, but a flag is not proof, and deciding to send a claim to the special investigations unit is a judgment call. [1][14] |
| Conduct detailed bill reviews to control litigation and medical costs | AI helps, you check | ChatGPT, ChatGPT data analysis | Bill review software and AI data analysis can line up charges against fee schedules and spot outliers, but challenging a provider's bill still needs a person who can explain the reasons. [1][5] |
| Examine claim forms and policies to decide coverage | AI helps, you check | Lemonade AI Jim | For simple renters or pet claims, Lemonade's AI checks the policy terms and approves on its own, but reading policy language against disputed facts is licensed judgment, and wrong denials invite bad faith lawsuits. [13] |
| Interview claimants, witnesses, police and doctors | Still human | None | Hearing hesitation in a recorded statement or calming a family after a house fire takes a person on the other end of the line. |
| Investigate, evaluate and settle claims | AI helps, you check | CCC Estimate-STP, Lemonade AI Jim | Small, clear claims such as minor car damage or a stolen bike can now be estimated and settled with no adjuster, but larger claims still need a person to pull the facts, the policy and the people together. [11][13] |
| Negotiate settlements or recommend litigation | Still human | None | Settlement talks with claimants, public adjusters and attorneys depend on reading the other side and knowing your authority. |
| Pay and process claims within your authority level | AI helps, you check | Lemonade AI Jim | Lemonade's AI runs fraud checks and sends payment on simple claims in seconds, but insurers still set dollar limits on who can approve larger payments because a person has to answer for each one. [13] |
| Set or recommend reserves | Still human | None | A reserve is your forecast of what a claim will really cost, and it shapes the insurer's books, so it needs experienced judgment on each file. |
| Confer with defense counsel on claims in litigation | Still human | None | Litigation strategy, privileged conversations and settlement authority all run through people. |
| Collect evidence to support contested claims in court | Still human | None | Evidence has to be gathered with a clean chain of custody and defended by someone who can testify about it. |
| Attend mediations and trials | Still human | None | Showing up with authority to settle and answering a mediator's questions in real time is in person work. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace claims adjusters?
Not entirely, but it is cutting how many are needed. BLS projects claims adjuster, examiner and investigator jobs to fall 5 percent from 2025 to 2035 and says software that estimates claims from photos and growing AI capabilities will make workers more productive [2]. About 20,900 openings a year are still expected, mostly to replace people who leave [3].
Can AI estimate car or home damage from photos?
Yes, for minor car damage. CCC Estimate-STP builds a line by line repair estimate from photos in seconds, and insurers can send it straight to the customer or have an adjuster approve it first [11]. Tractable says its AI could handle more than 60% of motor claims this way [12]. Home losses and serious damage still get a field inspection and a human review [2].
Do claims adjusters need a license?
It depends on the state. Some states have few requirements, while others require prelicensing education, an exam or both, plus continuing education to renew [2]. Staff adjusters at an insurer may work under the company's license in some states, and public adjusters can face separate rules [2].
Can I use ChatGPT to summarize claim files?
Only within your company's rules, because claim files hold medical and personal data. Technically it can summarize PDFs and spreadsheets, but OpenAI tells users to review outputs and warns that scanned documents may not be read reliably [5]. If you record calls for transcription, you are responsible for getting consent [6].
Is claims adjusting a good career in 2026?
It pays a median of $78,000 [2], but the field is shrinking, and BLS says productivity gains from AI may dampen demand for some jobs [4]. Adjusters who handle complex property, injury or litigated claims, or who move into compliance, which BLS projects to grow 4 percent [8], are on firmer ground.
