Will AI replace paralegals?
Not the whole job. Legal AI tools already summarize case records and draft research memos, contracts and discovery papers, but an attorney and a careful paralegal still check every citation, meet clients and run the case. BLS expects little or no change in paralegal jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 40,800 openings a year, and says AI will limit demand.

The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (23-2011.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Request, review and summarize case records | AI does this today | CoCounsel Legal, Lexis+ AI with Protégé | Legal AI tools summarize uploaded records and can review thousands of documents against your questions, with answers linked to the source page so you can spot check them. [3][4] |
| Prepare, edit and review legal documents such as contracts, wills and briefs | AI helps, you check | Spellbook, Lexis+ AI with Protégé, CoCounsel Legal | AI drafts clauses, redlines contracts and builds brief outlines in Word, but the vendors themselves say an attorney must review and validate the draft before it goes out. [3][4][6] |
| Draft discovery requests and responses | AI helps, you check | Briefpoint | Discovery tools turn a complaint into a first set of requests and suggest objections, but every request and response must be checked by the attorney before service. [7] |
| Research statutes, court decisions and legal articles | AI helps, you check | Lexis+ AI with Protégé, CoCounsel Legal | AI research assistants answer questions with linked citations, but courts have sanctioned filings with made up cases, so every authority still has to be pulled and read. [3][4][8] |
| Investigate the facts of a case using public records and online sources | AI helps, you check | Lexis+ AI with Protégé, Clio | AI can sort and analyze the documents you gather and build timelines, but finding the right records and judging what they prove is still your work. [4][5] |
| Prepare affidavits and legal letters and keep case files organized | AI helps, you check | Clio, CoCounsel Legal | AI drafts letters and client updates and suggests file names, but facts in a sworn affidavit and what goes in the file need a person to confirm. [3][5] |
| Manage attorney calendars, court deadlines and meetings | AI helps, you check | Clio | Practice software now pulls deadlines out of court orders and creates calendar events, but a missed deadline can sink a case, so you still check each one against the source. [5] |
| Prepare for trial, such as organizing exhibits | AI helps, you check | Lexis+ AI with Protégé | AI can sort documents and build chronologies, but picking, marking and readying exhibits for a judge is hands on work done with the trial team. [4] |
| Meet with clients and other professionals to discuss case details | Still human | None | Clients share sensitive facts with a person they trust, and reading what is left unsaid is a human skill. |
| File pleadings with court clerks | Still human | None | Filing is mostly electronic now, but following each court's rules and answering for what was filed stays with the legal team. |
| Coordinate office work, including delivering subpoenas and contacting witnesses | Still human | None | Serving papers, lining up witnesses and keeping a busy office moving depend on people and phone calls, not software. |
| Help with real estate closings, such as reviewing title searches | AI helps, you check | V7 Go | AI pulls the requirements and exceptions out of title commitments and drafts a closing checklist, but title experts warn its output must be checked because one missed exception can become a claim. [13][14] |
| Inventory and appraise property for estate planning | AI helps, you check | CaseMark | AI can sort uploaded statements and appraisals into an asset list by type and beneficiary, but valuing items and talking with the family is still done by people. [15] |

Quick questions
Will AI replace paralegals?
Not soon, but it will shrink how many are needed. BLS projects little or no change in paralegal jobs from 2025 to 2035 and says demand will be limited by AI, which makes each paralegal more efficient [2]. About 40,800 openings a year are still expected, mostly to replace people who leave [2].
What AI tools do paralegals use?
Common ones include CoCounsel and Lexis+ AI for research, drafting and document review [3] [4], Clio for pulling deadlines from court documents and drafting client updates [5], Spellbook for contract redlines in Word [6] and Briefpoint for discovery drafts [7]. Each still expects a person to check the output.
Can AI draft legal documents on its own?
It can produce a first draft, but not a finished one. Briefpoint says all content should be reviewed by a qualified attorney before service [7], and Thomson Reuters says the attorney stays in control of facts, arguments and citations [3]. Courts had issued an estimated 712 decisions about made up AI content in filings by late 2025, some with fines over $15,000 [8].
How much time can AI save a paralegal?
Professionals in a 2025 Thomson Reuters survey expected AI to save them about 5 hours a week within a year [9]. Vendor claims run higher, such as Briefpoint's 30 or more hours per case on discovery [7], but those are not independent measurements.
Is becoming a paralegal still worth it in 2026?
It can be, if you plan to work alongside AI. The median paralegal earned $62,890 in May 2025 and law firms are expected to remain the largest employer [2]. Paralegals who can run legal AI tools well and catch their mistakes will be the ones firms keep.
