AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace bookkeepers?

Not the whole job. AI tools already categorize transactions, read receipts, send invoices, file payroll tax forms and answer simple questions about the numbers, but people still check the work, sign off on tax returns and explain what the numbers mean. BLS expects bookkeeping clerk jobs to shrink 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, yet still sees about 144,100 openings a year.

Quick questions

Will AI replace bookkeepers?

Not completely. BLS projects bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk jobs to fall 6 percent from 2025 to 2035 because software has automated many of their tasks [1]. It still expects about 144,100 openings each year as people retire or change jobs [1].

Can QuickBooks AI do my bookkeeping for me?

It can do part of it. QuickBooks fills in a transaction category only when it is highly confident, and you still post it [3]. Its Payments Agent creates and sends invoices and reminders [4], but someone still has to review the books and catch mistakes.

Which bookkeeping tasks are safest from AI?

Checking the work, handling cash and owning the rules. Xero lets you review, adjust or take over its automatic reconciliations [5], Digits sends unsure items to a person [9], and even QuickBooks hands business tax filing to human experts [15].

Is bookkeeping still a good career in 2026?

It still pays a median of $50,670 a year as of May 2025 [1]. BLS expects clerks to move into a more analytical and advisory role as routine tasks get automated [1], so bookkeepers who run the tools and own the review are in the best spot.

What jobs can bookkeepers move into?

Tax preparer is the fastest switch, with a May 2025 median of $54,920 and 5 percent projected growth [10]. Accountants earn a median of $83,680 with 5 percent growth [11], and financial managers earn $166,570 with 10 percent growth, though that takes years of experience [12].
