AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace court reporters?
Not the whole job, but the pressure is real. Digital recording and legal speech recognition can now capture depositions and produce rough transcripts, yet certified reporters still swear witnesses, guard exhibits and certify the official record, and AI accuracy gaps for some speakers remain unsolved. BLS projects little or no change in court reporter jobs from 2025 to 2035 and says AI transcription is expected to dampen demand.

Task by task: what AI can do today
The core tasks of the job, from the US Labor Department's O*NET profile (27-3092.00). Each verdict links to its evidence.
| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture a word for word record of hearings, depositions and committee meetings | AI helps, you check | Rev, Rev | Digital recorders paired with legal speech recognition can capture a proceeding live, but someone qualified still runs the session, labels speakers and stands behind the record. [2][6] |
| Translate steno strokes into text with computer aided transcription software | AI does this today | Stenograph Case CATalyst | CAT software such as Case CATalyst turns your strokes into English in real time and now suggests fixes for mistranslations as you write. [7] |
| Turn recorded proceedings into transcripts in the required format | AI helps, you check | Rev, Otter.ai | AI services return rough drafts within a day, but court ready final transcripts are still checked by certified court or electronic reporters before delivery. [6] |
| Proofread transcripts for spelling, punctuation and misheard words | AI helps, you check | Stenograph Case CATalyst | Tools like Mistran Minder flag likely mistranslations and punctuation slips, and audio synced hotspots take you straight to the parts that need a listen. [7] |
| Send live text feeds to judges and attorneys during proceedings | AI helps, you check | Stenograph Case CATalyst, Verbit Legal Visor | Realtime steno and AI live capture both put text on attorneys' screens as people speak, but a reporter keeps the feed accurate when speakers talk over each other. [6][7] |
| Provide live captions for meetings, classes and events | AI helps, you check | None | Automatic captions are now common, but studies show speech recognition makes nearly twice as many errors for Black speakers, so accurate captioning for deaf viewers still leans on trained captioners. [4][8] |
| Deliver certified copies of transcripts to judges, attorneys and the public | AI helps, you check | Stenograph Case CATalyst | Software can produce a signed, password protected PDF with linked exhibits in one click, but the certification and the decision about who may receive a copy rest with the reporter. [7] |
| Write at speed on a stenotype machine | Still human | None | Writing 225 words a minute or more in shorthand is a trained skill, and when AI is used instead it relies on audio rather than a reporter's own notes. [3] |
| Ask speakers to repeat or clarify remarks that were unclear | Still human | None | Only a person in the room can stop a witness and say the answer was not caught, which a recorder in the corner cannot do. |
| Read back earlier testimony when a judge or attorney asks | Still human | None | Read back happens live in court or at a deposition, and finding and voicing the exact passage under pressure is the reporter's job. |
| Administer oaths to witnesses | Still human | None | Swearing in a witness is a legal act tied to a commission or license, not something software is authorized to do. |
| Mark, log and safeguard exhibits and add them to the case file | Still human | None | Handling physical and digital exhibits and keeping the chain of custody intact needs an accountable person. [3] |
| Verify transcript accuracy against the record and confirm rulings with judges | Still human | None | When a ruling or a word is disputed, the reporter who took it down answers for it, and federal rules accept a transcript certified by the person who reported it. [3] |
| Organize and store steno notes and audio from each session | Still human | None | Keeping notes and backups secure for years is part of protecting the record, and courts still expect a named professional to be responsible for it. [3] |

Quick questions
Will AI replace court reporters?
Not fully, at least not soon. BLS projects little or no change in court reporter jobs from 2025 to 2035 with about 1,800 openings a year, while saying AI transcription is expected to dampen demand and reporters will still be needed to review and edit digitally produced records [2]. In February 2026 the NCRA board said AI and ASR can help as supplemental tools but cannot create and preserve the record the way a certified reporter can [4].
Is court reporting a good career with AI?
It still pays well, with a median of $72,420 in May 2025, and many states require a license or certification that includes a speed and accuracy test [2]. The risk is policy: a 2026 bipartisan bill would have the federal courts study AI speech to text tools and recommend how to use them within 18 months [5].
How accurate is AI transcription for court proceedings?
It depends heavily on who is talking. A 2020 PNAS study of five commercial speech recognition systems found an average word error rate of 0.35 for Black speakers versus 0.19 for white speakers [8]. The court reporters' association cites that gap, plus chain of custody concerns, in its case for human reporters, so read its white paper as an advocacy view [3].
What is a digital court reporter and does it use AI?
A digital reporter records the proceeding with audio equipment instead of a steno machine. Vendors such as Verbit now offer AI capture built for digital reporters, rough drafts within 24 hours and certified finals checked by certified court or electronic reporters [6].
Do stenographers already use AI?
Yes. Stenograph says its Case CATalyst software uses predictive analytics and artificial intelligence for cleaner translation, with features that suggest fixes for mistranslated steno and jump you to spots that need an audio check [7].
