AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026

Will AI replace management consultants?

No, but it is reshaping the junior end of the pyramid. Tools like McKinsey's Lilli and Copilot already speed up research, scoping, interviews and slide drafting, yet a Harvard and BCG study found AI made consultants worse on problems outside its abilities, and Deloitte had to refund part of a government fee over AI errors. BLS projects 10% growth for management analysts from 2025 to 2035, with about 94,100 openings a year.

Quick questions

Will AI replace management consultants?

Not soon. BLS projects 10% growth for management analysts from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, as firms look to cut costs and work more efficiently [2]. What is changing is the junior grind: McKinsey's tech leader has said AI can already make slides [4].

How do consulting firms like McKinsey use AI?

McKinsey's internal tool Lilli drafts proposals and slide decks, finds internal experts and researches industries, and over 75% of its staff use it monthly [4]. The firm reports about 30% time savings on gathering and synthesizing information [4].

Does AI make consultants better at their job?

On the right tasks, yes. In a Harvard and BCG experiment with 758 consultants, those using GPT 4 finished 12.2% more tasks, worked 25.1% faster and produced over 40% higher quality work [3]. On a task outside AI's abilities, they were 19 percentage points less likely to be correct [3].

Can AI run stakeholder interviews for a consulting project?

Partly. Tools like Usercall run AI moderated voice interviews with employees in parallel and return transcripts, themes and quotes for change and diagnostic work [10]. The vendor says the output is qualitative, not a measure of how common a view is, and that sensitive, high stakes conversations should still be run by a person [10].

What went wrong with Deloitte's AI report?

Deloitte Australia agreed to refund part of an AU$440,000 government contract after its report was found to contain a made up court quote and references to research that does not exist [5]. The revised version disclosed that Azure OpenAI was used in writing it [5].

Is management consulting still a good career with AI?

Yes, if you build judgment, client trust and industry depth rather than just slide skills. Management analysts earned a median $101,860 in May 2025, with about 94,100 openings a year [2]. Learning where AI helps and where it fails, as the BCG study showed, is now part of the job [3].
