AI AND YOUR JOB · CHECKED OCT 2026
Will AI replace teachers?
No. AI now drafts lesson plans, quizzes, worksheets and feedback, and teachers who use it weekly report saving about six hours a week, but running a classroom, reading students and answering to parents stay human. BLS expects little or no change in high school teacher jobs from 2025 to 2035 because of falling enrollment, not AI, with about 63,500 openings a year.

| Task | Verdict | Tools doing it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write lesson objectives and plan units that follow the curriculum | AI helps, you check | MagicSchool, Khanmigo, ChatGPT for Teachers | Teacher AI tools draft a standards aligned lesson plan or a multi week unit from a short prompt, and lesson planning is the most common way teachers use AI, but you still decide what fits your students and your pacing. [5][7][9][13] |
| Prepare worksheets, slides and other class materials | AI helps, you check | MagicSchool, Brisk Teaching, Curipod | About 80% of teachers who use AI say it saves time on worksheets and quizzes, but generated materials can contain errors or miss the level of your class, so you check them first. [4][5] |
| Adapt teaching methods and materials for students with different needs | AI helps, you check | Diffit, MagicSchool, Khanmigo | AI can rewrite a reading at a lower level or suggest student groupings, but knowing which student needs what comes from watching them in class every day. [5][7] |
| Write, give and grade tests and quizzes | AI helps, you check | Khanmigo, MagicSchool, Quizlet | Generating quiz questions and scoring multiple choice is easy for AI, but teacher educators say it is weaker at judging nuanced answers, and you own every grade. [4][7] |
| Grade class work and homework and give written feedback | AI helps, you check | Brisk Teaching, MagicSchool | Brisk drafts comments right inside a student's Google Doc so you can give feedback to a whole class in minutes, but you should read each comment before the student does. [6][4] |
| Prepare and run extra help programs for students who are behind | AI helps, you check | Khanmigo, MagicSchool, SchoolAI | AI tutors can give a struggling student extra practice and hints between lessons, but spotting who is falling behind and why takes a teacher who knows them. [5][7] |
| Prepare reports and report card comments on students | AI helps, you check | MagicSchool | AI report card comment generators turn your notes into polished wording, but the judgment about each student and what parents should hear is yours. [5] |
| Teach through lectures, discussions and demonstrations | Still human | None | Holding the attention of 30 teenagers, reading the room and changing course mid lesson is live human work. |
| Set and enforce rules for behavior and keep order in the classroom | Still human | None | Classroom management depends on presence, relationships and consistency that software cannot supply. |
| Observe students' performance, behavior, social development and health | Still human | None | Noticing a student who is withdrawn, hungry or being bullied happens in the hallway and the classroom, not in a dashboard. |
| Guide and counsel students with academic or personal problems | Still human | None | Students open up to adults they trust, and teachers are often required to report concerns about a child's safety. |
| Meet with parents, counselors and administrators about student progress | Still human | None | Parent conferences and team meetings about a struggling student need a person who can explain, listen and make commitments. |
| Enforce school policies, including academic honesty rules | AI helps, you check | Turnitin | AI detectors flag work that may be AI written, but Turnitin says its score should not be the sole basis for action and warns teachers to plan for false positives, so you talk with the student and make the call. [8][14] |
| Keep accurate student records as required by law and district policy | Still human | None | Grades and attendance are legal records under privacy rules, and the teacher is accountable for what goes in them. |
| Supervise class projects, field trips and extracurricular activities | Still human | None | Keeping students safe on a trip or coaching a club is hands on supervision that only an adult in the room can do. |

Quick questions
Will AI replace teachers?
No. BLS projects little or no change in high school teacher jobs from 2025 to 2035 and points to falling enrollment and school budgets, not technology, as the reason [2]. About 63,500 openings a year are still expected as teachers retire or leave [2].
How many teachers use AI?
A Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey of over 2,000 teachers found 60% used AI tools for work in the 2024 to 2025 school year [4]. Teachers who use it weekly save an average of 5.9 hours a week, about six weeks over a school year [3]. A year earlier RAND found only 25% used AI, mostly for lesson planning [9].
What are the best AI tools for teachers?
MagicSchool offers more than 80 teacher tools, from lesson plans and rubrics to report card comments [5]. Khanmigo for Teachers is free for U.S. teachers [7], ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified U.S. K to 12 teachers and plans multi week units [13], and Brisk drafts feedback inside Google Docs [6]. All of them still need a teacher to check the output.
Can AI grade essays?
It can draft feedback, not final grades. Brisk writes comments into a student's Google Doc for the teacher to deliver [6], but a teacher educator told Fortune AI suits low level grading like multiple choice and is weaker on nuanced work [4].
Can teachers trust AI detectors like Turnitin?
Only as one piece of evidence. Turnitin claims a false positive rate under 1% for fully human writing and says it may miss about 15% of AI text, and it states the score should not be the sole basis for action [8]. Turnitin itself tells educators to plan for how to talk with a student after a false positive [14].
