Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of cloud storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and a 1 million token context window Gemini plans ↗. If you already pay Google for storage, that bundle can make Gemini close to free.

At the low end, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and access to video generation Gemini plans ↗. ChatGPT Go is $8 a month and gives 10 times the free tier's messages, uploads and images ChatGPT Go launch ↗. OpenAI has said it planned to test ads in Free and Go ChatGPT Go launch ↗.

Why Google Workspace users lean toward Gemini

Gemini's biggest advantage is where it lives. For a business that writes every proposal in Google Docs and runs every client thread in Gmail, having the assistant inside those apps saves the copy and paste step.

Where ChatGPT pulls ahead

ChatGPT is the better pick if images matter. On LMArena's text to image leaderboard, OpenAI's image models held the first three spots, with Google's best model sixth LMArena images ↗. ChatGPT Images is on every plan, and Plus, Pro and Business add a thinking mode for images plus editing tools that let you select part of an image and describe a change ChatGPT Images help ↗.

ChatGPT also bundles a wide set of tools in one app: deep research, an agent mode called ChatGPT Work, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs on Plus ChatGPT pricing ↗. If you do not use Google apps for work, those built in tools matter more than Gemini's Workspace hooks.

On writing quality, independent reviews are mixed. The AI Report found Gemini placed consistently across categories without leading any, while ChatGPT won one round The AI Report ↗. In short, both are capable writers, and neither review shows a clear writing gap between them.

Which one to try first

Start with the tool that sits closest to your daily work. If your inbox, calendar and files are in Google, try Gemini first, ideally on a Workspace plan that includes it in Docs and Sheets Workspace pricing ↗. If you use Microsoft 365 or a mix of apps, Gemini's main advantage shrinks and ChatGPT's broader toolset becomes more useful.

Next, think about images and video. A business that posts on social media every day will get more from ChatGPT's image tools LMArena images ↗. A business that wants short AI video clips should look at Google's plans, since video generation appears from AI Plus up Gemini plans ↗.

Finally, run a fair trial. Give both free plans the same three real tasks, such as a reply to a tricky customer email, a summary of a long PDF and a social post with an image. Pick the one whose output needed fewer edits.

Limits and trade offs

Neither company gives exact message counts for its consumer plans. OpenAI describes limits with words like limited, expanded and maximum ChatGPT pricing ↗. Google describes Ultra's limits as 5 times or 20 times those of AI Pro, and says the free plan has varying access to its 3.1 Pro model Gemini plans ↗. If you hit limits often, that is a sign to upgrade, not to switch tools.

Gemini's video features vary a lot by plan. AI Pro only includes a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite, while Ultra includes Veo 3.1 Gemini plans ↗. If video is the main reason you are buying, price out the Ultra tier before you commit.

ChatGPT's cheapest plan may carry ads in future, according to OpenAI's own launch post for Go ChatGPT Go launch ↗. If an ad free experience matters to you or your staff, budget for Plus instead.

Both tools can be wrong. Check every fact, figure and quote before it goes to a customer, and avoid pasting sensitive client details unless your plan and settings cover it.
