Pricing: similar at the top, different at the bottom

The main plans cost almost the same. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month when you pay $200 up front for a year Claude pricing ↗. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month and includes 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, and a 1 million token context window Gemini plans ↗.

Gemini has a much cheaper entry point. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and adds 400 GB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and access to video generation Gemini plans ↗. Claude has nothing between Free and Pro Claude pricing ↗.

For heavy users, both top plans start around $100. Claude Max starts at $100 a month in 5x and 20x versions measured against Pro Claude pricing ↗. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month, with a $199.99 tier, and adds Veo 3.1 video and first access to Deep Think Gemini plans ↗.

Where Claude is stronger

Writing is Claude's clearest advantage in independent reviews. Where Gemini is stronger

Gemini is built into Google's apps. Google AI Pro puts it in Gmail, Docs and Vids Gemini plans ↗, and on Workspace Business Standard and Plus it also works in Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat Workspace pricing ↗. Claude can reach Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and Sheets through connectors Claude features ↗, but it works alongside those apps rather than inside them.

Gemini also makes media. Its free plan includes image generation and editing, and paid plans add video generation, with Veo 3.1 on Ultra Gemini plans ↗. Which one to try first, or use both

If your business runs on Google, start with Gemini. The fastest win is drafting replies and summaries without leaving Gmail and Docs, and the storage bundle can offset the cost Gemini plans ↗. Check that your Workspace plan includes Gemini in the apps you use most, since Business Starter is limited to Gmail and Vids Workspace pricing ↗.

If your work is mainly writing, analysis or code, start with Claude. Its strengths in writing and coding are where independent reviews agree most MindStudio comparison ↗ The AI Report ↗. If you also need images, pair Claude with a separate image tool, since it does not make them Claude images help ↗.

Small teams can use either. Claude Team costs $25 per standard seat monthly or $20 yearly, for 2 to 150 seats, with project sharing Claude pricing ↗. Gemini for teams comes through Google Workspace plans Workspace pricing ↗.

Many small businesses do not have to choose. Because both offer free plans Claude pricing ↗ Gemini plans ↗, a common setup is to pay for one and keep the other free for the jobs it does better. For example, a marketing agency might pay for Claude Pro for client copy and keep Gemini free for quick images and searches. A Google based office might pay for Google AI Pro and use Claude Free for a second opinion on important documents.

If you do pay for both, the cost is about $40 a month per person at the main tiers Claude pricing ↗ Gemini plans ↗. That is worth it only if each tool saves real time every week. A simple test: keep a list for two weeks of which tool you opened for each task. If one of them sits mostly unused, cancel it.

For teams, mixing tools adds admin. You will have two sets of logins, two places where work is stored and two data policies to check. A single team plan is usually simpler to manage, so pick the one that matches most of your team's daily work and add the second only where there is a clear gap.

Limits and trade offs

Neither publishes exact message counts. Anthropic describes usage as multiples, such as Pro giving at least five times the free plan per five hour session, and says limits may be adjusted Claude pricing ↗. Google describes Ultra as 5 or 20 times AI Pro, and gives the free plan varying access to its 3.1 Pro model Gemini plans ↗.

Model names and rankings move fast. On LMArena's text leaderboard updated October 8, 2026, a preliminary Google model ranked first and Anthropic models filled most of the rest of the top 10 LMArena text ↗. Treat any ranking as a snapshot, and judge both tools on your own tasks.

Both can be wrong. Check facts, numbers and quotes before anything reaches a customer.
