OUR VERDICT

Intercom is a full customer service platform: a help desk, shared inbox, help center and messenger with the Fin AI agent built in. It is excellent for support teams that handle a steady flow of conversations, but per seat plus per outcome pricing adds up, and most small businesses only need Fin or a simpler chat tool.

What Intercom is

Intercom is customer service software. It gives your team a shared inbox and ticketing, a Messenger chat widget for your site or app, a public help center and reporting Intercom pricing ↗. On top of that sits Fin, Intercom's AI agent, which answers customer questions and hands off to a person when needed Intercom pricing ↗ Fin pricing ↗.

Pricing has two parts: seats for each teammate on a plan, and usage, such as Fin outcomes and paid messaging channels Intercom pricing ↗. There are three plans: Essential, Advanced and Expert Intercom pricing ↗.

Fin can also be bought on its own and run on top of another help desk such as Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk, Salesforce, Zoho or Gorgias Fin pricing ↗. That makes Intercom the platform and Fin the product many smaller businesses actually need.

What it does well

Fin is the main draw. It works across voice, email, Messenger, live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Slack, Instagram and Facebook Messenger Fin pricing ↗. Intercom says setup takes under an hour Intercom pricing ↗.

You pay for results, not attempts. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, such as a resolution, and only one outcome is billed per conversation no matter how many actions Fin takes Fin pricing ↗. If Fin passes a conversation to your team without an outcome, you are not charged Fin pricing ↗.

The help desk is complete. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, a workflow automation builder, round robin assignment and a multilingual help center, and Expert adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs and multibrand support Intercom pricing ↗. Live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips are free and unlimited on all plans Intercom pricing ↗.

It is easy to try. Fin has a 14 day free trial with unlimited outcomes and no credit card Fin pricing ↗. Early stage startups can apply for up to 93 percent off Intercom pricing ↗.

Where it falls short

Costs stack up. You pay per seat, per Fin outcome and for paid channels, and add ons like Copilot and Pro cost extra Intercom pricing ↗. A three person team on Advanced pays $255 a month in seats before any Fin outcomes Intercom pricing ↗.

Some costs are hard to predict. Outcome based billing rises with volume, and Fin used with another help desk has a 50 outcome monthly minimum Fin pricing ↗. SMS, WhatsApp, email campaigns and phone are pay as you go, and the pricing page does not show per message rates Intercom pricing ↗.

It is more than most small businesses need. Owners who just want a chatbot on their site can get one from Tidio or Chatbase for less Tidio pricing ↗ Chatbase pricing ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this review with results.
