THE SHORT ANSWERUsable

Yes, for several jobs. AI phone hosts, schedule builders and writing assistants are ready for independent restaurants now, while full AI phone ordering is still maturing. For most full service restaurants we recommend Slang AI, which answers calls around the clock and books straight into OpenTable, Resy, SevenRooms and Yelp, starting at $399 a month per location.

Phone answering, reservations and scheduling work well today, but most tools are quote based or priced per location, and AI phone ordering is still rolling out.

Slang AI

Best for full service restaurants that miss calls during the dinner rush.

Every unanswered call is a lost booking or a guest who goes elsewhere. Slang AI is a voice assistant built only for restaurants. It answers 24/7, books reservations, and answers questions using information you approve rather than open ended AI answers Slang AI ↗. When a guest's first choice is full, it can suggest open tables at a nearby or sister location Slang AI ↗.

The big reason we picked it is integrations. Slang books directly into OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp and Resy, logs special requests in OpenTable, and connects to Tripleseat and Perfect Venue for private events Slang pricing ↗. That means it fits the reservation system you already use instead of adding another one. VIP callers can be routed straight to staff, and calls it does not understand are forwarded to a person Slang pricing ↗ Slang AI ↗. You can keep your existing phone number, and Slang says setup takes under 30 minutes Slang pricing ↗.

The Core plan starts at $399 a month per location and covers reservation management, text confirmations, VIP handling and bilingual support Slang pricing ↗. Premium, at $599 per location, adds its newer Superhost voice with 97 languages, private event capture, cross selling, real time alerts and white glove support Slang pricing ↗. The pricing page does not mention a free trial or contract length, so ask before you sign Slang pricing ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • Books directly into OpenTable, Resy, SevenRooms and Yelp
  • Answers from your approved information only
  • Keeps your existing number
  • Routes VIPs and unknown questions to staff
  • Setup in under 30 minutes, per Slang

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • $399 a month per location is a real cost for small cafes
  • Takeout ordering not mentioned on its site
  • No free trial or contract terms listed
Budget pickStarts at $30/month per location; AI scheduling on Plus at $70/month

Homebase

Best for owners who build the staff schedule by hand every week.

Scheduling eats hours of a manager's week, and labor is one of your biggest costs. Homebase is a scheduling, time clock and team app used by restaurants, retail and hospitality businesses Homebase scheduling ↗. Its AI auto scheduling builds an optimized schedule in seconds, which you review and send to the team in one click Homebase scheduling ↗. A Scheduling Assistant can also turn a photo or upload of your current paper schedule into a digital one Homebase scheduling ↗.

Homebase connects to Square, Clover, Toast and Shopify, so you can staff more heavily in the time slots where sales are highest Homebase scheduling ↗. Labor costs update as you add shifts, and overtime alerts warn you before you publish Homebase scheduling ↗. Staff set their availability and swap shifts from their phones Homebase scheduling ↗.

The AI Scheduling Assistant comes with the Plus plan at $70 a month per location, with unlimited employees Homebase pricing ↗. The Essentials plan is $30 per location, and All in One is $120 Homebase pricing ↗. The pricing page shows a 20 percent saving for annual billing and a 14 day free trial of All in One with no credit card Homebase pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • AI builds a full schedule in seconds
  • POS sales data from Toast, Square and Clover
  • Overtime alerts before you publish
  • 14 day free trial, no card

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • AI scheduling needs the $70 Plus plan
  • Not restaurant specific
  • Hiring Assistant is a $99 a month add on
Best free optionFree; Plus starts at $20/month

ChatGPT

Best for writing review replies, menu descriptions and social posts at no cost.

Some of the most useful AI work in a restaurant is writing: replying to a two star Google review calmly, describing a new seasonal dish, or turning a staff policy into a clear one page handout. A general chatbot does all of this well, and ChatGPT's free plan includes unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails ChatGPT pricing ↗.

Free has limits on uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory ChatGPT pricing ↗. That is fine for short writing jobs. If you want saved projects for your menu, brand voice and policies, ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month ChatGPT pricing ↗ ChatGPT Plus ↗.

ChatGPT does not post anything for you. Replying to Google reviews still happens in your Business Profile, where Google checks each reply against its policies before it appears, usually within 10 minutes Google review replies ↗. Read every draft before you post it, and never paste guest phone numbers or card details into a chatbot.

Why we like it

  • Unlimited text chats on the free plan
  • Handles reviews, menus, posts and staff docs
  • No card needed to start

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Does not connect to your POS or reservations
  • You copy and paste replies by hand
  • Uploads and memory limited on Free

Owner.com

Best for takeout heavy restaurants that want to move orders off delivery apps.

Delivery apps charge customers up to 15 percent of an order, according to Owner, and keep the customer relationship Owner pricing ↗. Owner.com gives an independent restaurant its own AI optimized website, online ordering, a branded mobile app, loyalty rewards and automated SEO pages, plus AI powered email and text marketing that follows up with past guests Owner pricing ↗ Owner.com ↗.

There are two plans. Flexible is $249 a month plus a 5 percent restaurant fee per order. Flat Rate is $499 a month with no restaurant fee, and Owner recommends it once you pass $5,000 a month in online sales Owner pricing ↗. On both plans guests pay a 5 percent order support fee Owner pricing ↗. Setup, migration, chargeback protection and 24/7 support are included, billing is month to month, and there is no cancellation fee Owner pricing ↗.

Owner also sells its own POS and kitchen tablet, and lists AI phone ordering only as a waitlist, so that feature is not generally available yet Owner.com ↗. Its sales growth figures come from its own case studies Owner.com ↗. No free trial is mentioned Owner pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • Website, ordering, app, loyalty and marketing in one
  • Month to month, no cancellation fee
  • Setup and migration included
  • Flat Rate plan has no per order restaurant fee

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Guests pay a 5 percent order support fee
  • AI phone ordering is waitlist only
  • No free trial listed

Loman

Best for pizzerias and takeout spots that want AI to take phone orders into the POS.

Slang focuses on reservations. If most of your calls are takeout and delivery orders, Loman is built for that. Loman lists integrations with Toast, SpotOn, Clover, Shift4, Square, Aloha by NCR, Olo and Stream, plus OpenTable and Resy Loman pricing ↗.

Prices and features from each vendor’s site, checked Oct 9, 2026. Prices change often.

Who this is for

This guide is for owners and general managers of independent restaurants, cafes, pizzerias and small groups with a few locations. It covers software, not robots: tools that answer the phone, take orders, build schedules and help you respond to guests. If you are looking at serving or bussing robots, see our guide to restaurant serving robots.

Most restaurants do not need all of these tools. Start with the job that costs you the most. If the phone rings unanswered during service, an AI phone host is the first buy. If you lose sales to delivery app commissions, look at direct ordering. If a manager spends Sunday night on the schedule, start with scheduling. And everyone can use a free chatbot for review replies and menu copy today.

Large chains have different options. Several enterprise voice ordering vendors work mainly with national brands and quote only, and we cover them briefly in The competition.

Why you should trust us

We read each vendor's pricing, feature and integration pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. Every fact in this guide links to the page it came from. Where a vendor publishes no price, we say so instead of guessing.

We have not yet tested these tools hands on in a working restaurant. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with results such as how each phone host handles a noisy call or a complicated order. No vendor paid for placement, and we chose picks on merit.

How we picked

We split the restaurant workday into four jobs where AI software is in real use: answering calls and booking tables, taking orders, scheduling staff, and responding to guests and reviews. For each job we looked for tools sold to independent restaurants, not just national chains, with published prices or at least a clear plan structure.

Integrations carried a lot of weight. An AI phone host that cannot write into OpenTable or Resy, or a scheduler that cannot read sales from Toast or Square, creates double work. We also favored month to month terms and tools a manager can set up without an IT person.

  • Built for restaurants or widely used by them
  • Connects to common POS and reservation systems
  • Public pricing, or a clear plan structure
  • Clear handoff to a human for anything unusual
  • Short or no contract
  • Setup an owner or manager can do

What AI can and can't do for a restaurant today

AI phone hosts are the most mature restaurant AI. They answer every call, give hours, directions and parking details, and book or change reservations directly in your system Slang pricing ↗ Slang AI ↗. Slang supports 97 languages on its Premium plan and switches languages mid call Slang pricing ↗ Slang AI ↗. They are best at the repetitive calls that interrupt your host stand.

AI phone ordering is newer. Loman takes orders into the POS and processes payment over the phone Loman pricing ↗, and chains use enterprise vendors such as ConverseNow ConverseNow ↗. Owner.com still lists AI phone ordering as a waitlist Owner.com ↗. Expect to test with a few menu items, watch for mistakes with modifiers and allergies, and keep a person available.

Scheduling AI builds a reasonable first draft of the week from staff availability and sales data Homebase scheduling ↗, but a manager still needs to check it against what they know about the team. Writing tools draft review replies, menu descriptions and social posts in seconds, but they do not know your kitchen. They can invent details, so read every word before it goes public.

What AI cannot do well yet: judge a guest's mood on a complaint call, handle a food allergy question safely without a human, or replace the hospitality your staff provide in the room.

Before you sign up

Check integrations first. Ask each vendor to confirm in writing that it works with your exact POS and reservation system, and which plan includes that integration. Loman, for example, lists its POS integrations but not which plans include them Loman pricing ↗.

Ask about contract length, cancellation and trial terms. Owner.com is month to month with no cancellation fee Owner pricing ↗, while Slang and Loman do not list contract terms or trials on their pricing pages Slang pricing ↗ Loman pricing ↗. Homebase offers a 14 day trial without a card Homebase pricing ↗.

AI phone hosts record and summarize calls Slang pricing ↗. Some US states require everyone on a call to consent to recording, so ask the vendor how its greeting handles disclosure, and check with your own advisor. Never let an AI give allergy or dietary safety answers on its own; set it to send those calls to a person.

  • Confirm your POS and reservation system are supported on your plan
  • Ask for contract length, cancellation terms and any trial
  • Decide which calls must always go to a human: allergies, large parties, complaints
  • Load your menu, hours, policies and FAQs before going live
  • Listen to the first week of call recordings or summaries
  • Check call recording consent rules in your state

What to look forward to

AI phone ordering for independent restaurants is the next big step. Owner.com has a waitlist for it Owner.com ↗, and Loman already offers ordering with payment and upsells on its Premium plan Loman pricing ↗. As these tools take orders straight into the POS, the line between a phone host and an ordering system will blur.

We also expect more of these tools to combine jobs. Slang already captures private event leads and cross sells reservations Slang pricing ↗, and Homebase has added an AI hiring assistant Homebase pricing ↗. We will update this guide as prices and features change and as our hands on testing finishes.

The competition

ConverseNowQuote only

ConverseNow takes phone orders with voice AI for brands such as Domino's, Wingstop and Denny's, and integrates with POS systems like Brink, PAR, NCR Aloha and Olo ConverseNow ↗. It publishes no prices and its site is aimed at brands, so it suits chains more than single location independents ConverseNow ↗.

7shiftsNot stated on pricing page

7shifts is scheduling software made specifically for restaurants, and lists an AI Course Builder for staff training 7shifts pricing ↗. Its pricing page did not show plan prices when we checked 7shifts pricing ↗, so we could not compare it fairly with Homebase. It is worth a look for multi location groups.

BirdeyeQuote only

Birdeye is a reputation and marketing platform that covers reviews through its AI marketing coworker Birdeye pricing ↗. Pricing is custom and quote only, with no free trial mentioned Birdeye pricing ↗, which makes it more than most single restaurants need for review replies.

Google Business ProfileFree

Your Google Business Profile is free and is where most diners leave reviews. You can reply to every review once your business is verified, but Google's help page does not describe an AI reply feature Google review replies ↗, so pair it with a free chatbot for drafts.
