Claude Max is Anthropic's high usage plan for people who live in Claude and Claude Code all day. At $100 or $200 a month it is worth it only if you regularly hit the Pro limits; most part time users will be fine on Pro at $20.
What Claude Max is
Claude Max is a subscription tier for Anthropic's Claude apps. It includes everything in Claude Pro, with either 5 times or 20 times Pro's usage, higher output limits, early access to advanced features and priority access at busy times Claude pricing ↗.
It is not a separate product. You get the same chat app, the same models and the same Claude Code coding agent as on Pro, just with much more room before you hit a limit Claude pricing ↗ Claude Code ↗. For developers, Claude Code is the main reason to buy it. Anthropic says Claude Code understands your codebase, edits files, runs commands and can handle bug fixes, tests and multi day migrations Claude Code ↗.
Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this review with our results.
What it does well
The point of Max is headroom. Claude plans use a rolling five hour session window, and paid plans also have weekly limits Claude pricing ↗. Pro gives at least 5 times the Free plan's usage per session, and Max multiplies Pro by 5 or 20 Claude pricing ↗. If you run long agent sessions in Claude Code, that is the difference between stopping mid task and finishing it.
Claude Code runs where developers already work. Anthropic lists the terminal, VS Code and editors built on it such as Cursor and Devin Desktop, JetBrains IDEs, the web, the Claude desktop app, iOS and Android, GitHub and Slack, on macOS, Linux and Windows Claude Code ↗. It can read issues and open pull requests on GitHub or GitLab, follow imports across a repo for long refactors, and work on several tasks at once Claude Code ↗.
Max also adds priority access when traffic is high, which Pro does not include Claude pricing ↗. And because it is the same account, there is nothing new to set up. Upgrade from Pro and your existing projects, settings and tools carry over.
If you do run out, paid plans can keep going with usage credits billed at standard API rates Claude pricing ↗.
Where it falls short
It is expensive for most people. At $100 or $200 a month, Max costs five to ten times as much as Pro Claude Code ↗. Unless you hit Pro limits most weeks, you are paying for capacity you will not use.
It is billed monthly only. Pro has an annual option that brings it to $17 a month, but Max lists no annual discount Claude pricing ↗.
Limits still exist. Weekly limits apply on all paid plans, and Anthropic does not publish the exact numbers Claude pricing ↗. Max lowers the odds of hitting a wall, but it does not remove it. Some newer features also have their own caps. The pricing page lists one model, Fable, at 50% of weekly limits on Max Claude pricing ↗.
It is a single person plan. Teams that want shared billing, SSO and admin controls should look at the Team plan instead Claude pricing ↗.
