OUR VERDICT

Avidbots Neo is a large ride sized autonomous floor scrubber built for airports, malls, warehouses and other big hard floor sites. It is worth a demo if you clean tens of thousands of square feet a night and want detailed reporting, but it is far too big, and too opaque on price, for small offices or shops.

What Avidbots Neo is

Neo is an autonomous floor scrubbing robot made by Avidbots, a company founded in 2014 by University of Waterloo robotics engineers Avidbots ↗. The current version is sold as Neo 2, and there is a Neo 2W variant for warehouses, logistics and manufacturing Avidbots ↗. Avidbots says it has customers in over a dozen countries and service on five continents Avidbots ↗.

It is a big machine. Neo is about 152 cm (59.8 in) long and 137 cm (53.9 in) tall, and weighs 1,282 to 1,518 pounds depending on the cleaning head Avidbots ↗. It carries a 109 liter solution tank and a 135 liter recovery tank Avidbots ↗. You can choose disc heads (26 or 32 in) or cylindrical heads (24 or 32 in); the cylindrical versions also sweep debris into a tray Avidbots ↗.

The robot maps your facility once and builds a cleaning plan. Before each run, its sensors compare the space to the plan and pick a route, avoiding obstacles in real time Avidbots ↗. It can also be driven by hand in manual mode Avidbots ↗.

What it does well

Coverage is the headline. Avidbots says Neo cleans and disinfects up to 42,000 square feet per hour without help Avidbots ↗. Runtime is up to six hours per charge, and swappable battery sets let you keep it running longer Avidbots ↗.

Reporting is strong. The Avidbots Command Center is a web dashboard that shows productivity numbers, coverage maps by sector, cleaning quality ratings and each robot's status and location Avidbots ↗. Weekly emails summarize results Avidbots ↗. That makes it easier to prove the robot is doing its job to a manager or client.

Support is hands on. A customer success team handles deployment, training and facility specific cleaning plans, factory trained technicians help from delivery onward, and Avidbots offers 24/7 remote monitoring and assistance Avidbots ↗. An optional add on uses electrostatic spraying so one Neo can both clean and disinfect Avidbots ↗.

It handles a wide range of hard floors, including tile, concrete, epoxy, marble, terrazzo and vinyl Avidbots ↗. A system that detects head wear and adjusts pressure aims to cut pad and brush replacement Avidbots ↗.

Where it falls short

There is no public price. Pricing, financing and lease options are not on the product page, and buying starts with a demo Avidbots ↗. That makes it hard to compare with robots that list a price.

It is hard floors only. Avidbots says Neo is not for carpet or outdoor use, and it needs non foaming or low foaming detergent Avidbots ↗.

It still needs people. Neo pauses when it bumps something or an obstacle enters its safety zone, and an operator has to check and resume it Avidbots ↗. Avidbots recommends an operator supervise it, and someone must fill and drain the tanks Avidbots ↗. Its size also rules out tight corridors and small rooms.

The product page has a few loose ends. Runtime is listed as up to six hours in one place and four to six in another, and warranty terms are not stated Avidbots ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this review with results.

Pricing and plans

Avidbots does not publish a price for Neo. You book a demo, in person or virtual, and get a quote Avidbots ↗. The page links to an ROI calculator but does not show figures Avidbots ↗. Warranty terms are not stated, so ask during the quote Avidbots ↗.

Plan for ongoing costs. Consumables include floor pads, pad drivers, cylindrical brushes, squeegees, batteries and detergent, and Avidbots recommends its own parts over third party ones Avidbots ↗. It also recommends buying two battery sets and a dual battery cart for longer shifts Avidbots ↗.

Who should (and shouldn't) use it

  • Good fit: airports, malls, warehouses, arenas and large schools with big open hard floors to scrub every night Avidbots ↗.
  • Good fit: cleaning contractors who need coverage reports to show clients Avidbots ↗.
  • Skip it if: you run an office, clinic or shop; a compact robot like the Pudu CC1 Pro is a better size and lists a price RobotLAB Pudu CC1 Pro ↗.
  • Skip it if: your floors are mostly carpet, since Neo is for hard floors only Avidbots ↗.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Pudu CC1 Pro: our pick for most facilities, sweeping, scrubbing and vacuuming in one machine for around $24,000 or $669 a month RobotLAB Pudu CC1 Pro ↗.
  • Gausium Scrubber 50 Pro: our upgrade pick for large open floors, with a listed price on RobotLAB RobotLAB Gausium ↗.
  • Tennant T380AMR: a robotic scrubber you teach by walking it through a route once Tennant ↗.
  • SoftBank Whiz: a vacuum robot for carpeted offices and hotels, which Neo does not handle RobotLAB Whiz ↗.
